Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA) is a nonprofit law firm, providing free legal advice and representation on civil law matters to people of limited income, people with disabilities and people 60+ years of age. Our mission is to advocate for the legal rights of the vulnerable and disadvantaged so that they may enjoy safe, healthy, and independent lives in strong communities. MMLA’s goal is to live out its mission by achieving meaningful improvement in the lives of as many clients as possible each year. MMLA accomplishes this goal by providing direct legal advice and representation to individual clients, engaging in policy advocacy to achieve systemic change at all levels of government, developing collaborations with community organizations also serving MMLA's clients, and providing outreach and legal education to clients, organizations, and the community. MMLA’s most important stakeholders are the clients and the client communities that it serves. Its day-to-day activities are determined and driven by the needs and requests of the clients who come to us in search of help. MMLA provides legal advice and representation to people with low incomes in 20 counties in central Minnesota through offices in Minneapolis, St. Cloud and Willmar. It provides services in the following areas of law: housing, family, government benefits, disability, health, seniors, youth, consumer, immigration, and tax. MMLA also includes three statewide programs: - Minnesota Disability Law Center, which gives legal help to people with disabilities throughout Minnesota on legal issues relating to their disabilities; - Legal Services Advocacy Project, which engages in policy advocacy on issues affecting people with low incomes; - Legal Services State Support, which provides poverty law trainings to legal services and pro bono practitioners, and develops technology-based legal resources for the public and volunteer attorneys.

Legal Aid Attorney Jessica Heiser testified this week to a #mnleg Study Group, urging lawmakers to consider supportive, less punitive approaches to truancy to keep students with disabilities and students of color in school and learning! Heiser, of our Minnesota Disability Law Center, shared the story of a young client who missed school due to depression and anxiety. The law currently allows schools to oust “truant” students from their schools and compel parents to appear at truancy proceedings which are criminal proceedings. In the case of our client, the school revoked her open enrollment status, at the school she attended since 3rd grade, and kicked her back to her district of residence for her 12th grade year. We advocated for her and the school changed course, allowing the student, a National Merit Scholar, to return to her former school. On behalf of all students and families, Legal Aid is proposing a “defense to truancy” bill in the 2025 session. This is a sterling example of how your support of Legal Aid and our Legal Services Advocacy Project (LSAP) extends beyond our clients to all Minnesotans. It's #GiveToTheMax week! When you give to Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid, know you're giving the gift of justice to clients like Nadifo. Nadifo, a single mother, was in desperate need of a home repair. She found a contractor, but her situation went from bad to worse. That's when she turned to Legal Aid. As Consumer Attorney Beth Goodell explains, a contractor tore up Nadifo's house and didn't finish the work he started. Even so, he sued Nadifo. It’s not often we can take a case like this, so learn from Nadifo’s story when it comes to home repairs: 1. Get multiple estimates. 2. Never let someone work on your house without a signed contract. 3. Do your research. Consumer guidance is available on the website of LawHelpMN.org (the online way to connect with Legal Aid for assistance). The website of the Office of the Minnesota Attorney General is a good resource as well.
