March 22 is World Water Day - a day I have recognized since 2005 when I started working on global water issues. It’s also a moment to ask people to consider the question: What would your day look like if you didn’t have access to safe water? However, for more than one quarter of the world's population who lack access to clean drinking water, they don’t have the luxury of asking this question as it's their daily experience. As we recognize World Water Day, it’s important to reflect on the work we’re doing to ensure our technology supports both people and planet, specifically when it comes to the conservation of and access to one of Earth’s most precious resources. At Microsoft, it’s our goal to be water positive by 2030. How are we getting there? By cutting down on our own water use, replenishing water in key areas and the communities where we operate, improving global water access and sanitation, accelerating innovation, and pushing for smart water policies. This approach helps reduce water stress, protect watersheds, and increase water availability for people globally. To help us get there, we're focusing on being thoughtful stewards of water: ?? Increasing replenishment and global access to clean water: We're funding 80+ projects to replenish, reuse, and cut down on freshwater consumption in water-stressed locations globally and to increase access to water and sanitation services for people around the world. We just launched a new map where you can explore all these projects and the partners that helping us scale our impact. ?Improving efficiency: We’re working to conserve water at every stage of our operations. Our latest datacenters use advanced direct-to-chip liquid cooling systems, saving over 125 million liters of water each year. ??Reducing freshwater dependency: We're investing in global water recycling projects and rainwater harvesting initiatives to lessen the demands on freshwater supplies. August 24, 1995, was one of the biggest moments in PC and Microsoft history. Windows 95 launched, bringing personal computing mainstream, and at the same time, we were already looking ahead, shipping Internet Explorer 1.0 as the web took off.
