The third AI Colloquium of the Spring semester is set for tomorrow at Noon! In EERC 216, PhD Student Kevin Li is this week's speaker. Food and refreshments will be provided! Title: “Comparative Evaluation of 3D ROS SLAM under noisy conditions for USV navigation” Abstract: “Accurate mapping is crucial for the safe operation of Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USV), especially when relying on 3D LiDAR sensors, which are susceptible to noise from factors like water spray and turbulent surface conditions. This paper investigates the performance of two prominent 3D LiDAR mapping algorithms—HDL graph SLAM and Point LIO—when subjected to injected noise models that mimic real-world maritime disturbances. By introducing controlled noise into the sensor data, we evaluate how each algorithm maintains mapping accuracy under degraded conditions. Quantitative metrics such as Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) and Intersection over Union (IoU) are utilized to assess and compare the robustness of the generated maps. The study will highlight the open-source ROS mapping algorithms strengths and limitations in noisy environments. These findings aim to inform the development of more robust mapping strategies, ultimately enhancing the reliability and safety of USV navigation in challenging maritime settings.

The Art in Silico Event Series is excited to welcome Martin Krzywinski to MTU’s campus as part of this year’s schedule! His talk on March 24th will discuss effective data visualization strategies for figures, posters, and graphical abstracts, focusing on concision and form over function. This session is great for educators and students! His workshop on March 25th is the perfect place to work on your Art in Silico submission or creative project! After his opening talk during the workshop titled "Art is Science in Love", the remaining time will be an open discussion period where you can bounce ideas off of Martin and fellow attendees! The full event schedule is available at https://lnkd.in/g4DRMHrX

Sriram Malladi, a new ICC member, is tackling the challenge of flow-induced noise with Dr. Bhisham Sharma (Co-PI). This noise results from structural vibrations and aerodynamic phenomena such as broadband noise, turbulent flow interactions, and periodic acoustic emissions. Addressing this issue requires a combination of passive and active noise control strategies, including geometric optimization, material selection, and resonant suppression techniques. This project aims to advance analytical design methodologies by exploring metamaterial and resonator technologies. By developing mathematical models of acoustic impedance, the study seeks to improve noise prediction and control approaches, contributing to more effective solutions across various domains.? #icc #noisecontrol #vibration #solutions
