Developing leadership skills requires time and tutelage. Find out how Dean Dennis Livesay recently contributed to an intensive workshop designed to cultivate essential leadership skills and foster peer connections for newly or soon-to-be-promoted full professors from computing programs across North America as one of the co-chairs at the Computing Research Association (CRA) 2025 Leadership Academy. Read the article by Matt Hazenbush, which was published today in the March edition of Computing Research News, in a guest post for the College of Computing news blog: https://lnkd.in/gfAcjBie #ComputingLeaders #ComputingMentors

Assistant Professor, Department of Applied Computing, College of Computing, Michigan Technological University, MI, USA

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of delivering a hands-on workshop on drones and their transformative role in remote sensing. Hosted at?Michigan Tech College of Computing, this session engaged an audience eager to explore how drone technology is shaping future research. ?? Key Takeaways: ? Drone Technology Basics – Understanding the capabilities of small-flying, heavy-lifting, and underwater drones. ? Applications in Research – Showcasing how drones enhance snow detection on solar panels (boosting energy efficiency) and enable underwater imaging through advanced enhancement techniques. ? Live Demonstrations – Participants saw airborne and underwater drones in action, witnessing firsthand how these technologies are used for data collection. ?? It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm and curiosity from attendees, reinforcing the potential of drones in tackling real-world challenges. A big thank you to DataSENSE NRT project, funded by NSF, for sponsoring this workshop and helping make this knowledge-sharing opportunity possible! ?? Looking forward to continuing these discussions and collaborations! If you're interested in drones, AI, and remote sensing, let’s connect and explore new possibilities together. ?????? #Drones #RemoteSensing #AI #UnderwaterImaging #MachineLearning #ResearchInnovation #MTU #Robotics #NSF #DataSENSE

  • New York. London. Milan. Paris. Houghton. The global rollout of the first Fashion Weeks of 2025 included a smile-inducing parade of avant-garde tech-forward designs celebrated with interdisciplinary STEM style on the Michigan Tech campus. In addition to strutting models in their smart couture, robots had their moment on the McArdle Theatre runway during the Threading Empathy Fashion Show. Did we capture your design on the catwalk? Feel free to tell us about your creation in the comments. Hats off to the event sponsors: Michigan Tech Visual and Performing Arts, Michigan Tech Humanities, the Institute of Policy Ethics and Culture, and our own College of Computing. #smize #runway #FashionWeek #onthecatwalk Image descriptions: Image One: An iridescently lit model in full helmet and structural geometric skirt stomps the runway in shiny boots with screens lit in primary colors in Michigan Tech's Black Box theater, the McArdle. Image Two: Balto, Michigan Tech's Robot Dog, struts his stuff on the runway as a College of Computing student manipulates the controls. Image Three: A child reaches out her hand, engaged in the parade of diminutive robots dressed to impress and manipulated by two operators garbed in shiny full-face masks. Image Four: Two models stand before a geometrically lit blue and green screen as they give the audience a view of their over-the-knee white boots and slouchy sweater dresses—wearable tech at its most fashionable. Image Five: The audience takes in a frothy poof of a pom-flecked jumper in rainbow shades, juxtaposed over metallic sleeves, boots, and dark goggles, as the model turns a sideways gaze to the crowd. Image Six: A poetic drift of light blue and white chiffon-y fabric is balanced by the hard edges of constructed ruffles lining the long skirt of an artfully draped new-tech gown. Image Seven: A black-and-white motif set off by an oversized wide-brimmed hat and a novel use of cell phones graces the McArdle runway. Image Eight: A student wearing an MTU Biomedical Engineering shirt helps set up the runway pre-show. Image Nine: A full-belled skirt swirls as a Threading Empathy creator and model strikes a dancer's stance.

Michigan Tech has been designated as an R1 research institution by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, formally placing Tech among the top research universities in the United States. ?? "While we did not change who we are or what we do in pursuit of R1 designation, we are certainly proud to be recognized for the exemplary work our faculty and staff are doing in research and education, and we are excited for the opportunities that R1 status brings.” — Rick Koubek, president, Michigan Tech Carnegie’s prestigious R1 status is awarded to doctoral universities for excellence in research activities at the highest level. In 2025, of the more than 4,000 degree-granting institutions nationwide, only 187 are recognized as R1 universities. This is a monumental achievement for our students, faculty, and staff, and a testament to the incredible innovation happening right here at Tech.
