The Department of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering Technology has expanded its graduate offerings to include a new PhD in Manufacturing Engineering. “Research in the manufacturing engineering field has potential for talented people to propose innovative solutions, including tech-enabled sustainability initiatives,” says John Irwin, professor and chair of MMET. A team led by James DeGraff, research professor in the Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences, received $118,898 in matched grant funding from the National Park Service for their project “Preservation, Indexing, and Enhanced Utility of Historic Copper Mining Drill Hole Records.” This project will digitize and organize historic copper mining records from over 650 holes drilled from 1899 to 1970 and will result in an interactive map available to the public. From the Keweenaw Peninsula to the Arctic Circle, GMES alum Caleb Kaminski is all about making the world his classroom. After finding his passion in an introductory geology course, Caleb found his way to Michigan Tech, where he received degrees in geological engineering and geophysics. Last Saturday, over 50 Michigan Tech students participated in American Chemical Society’s Upper Peninsula Local Section Student Research Symposium. This symposium is an annual event hosted at Northern Michigan University, open to students from universities and colleges across the Upper Peninsula. Students from the departments of chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, and mechanical and aerospace engineering as well as students from the College of Sciences and Arts were able to showcase their hard work and scientific achievements. Go Huskies!
