“Before working with Rio Chante, I thought that community engagement was something that required only seriousness and fortitude, the working with RioChante has showed me that community engagement can be fun, engaging, and bring together people in ways that are beneficial to everyone involved. In Residential College in the Arts and Humanities at Michigan State University, we learn that identity and community building are extremely important, especially to minority groups, as Sister Circle helps women of color to build those relationships within RCAH and Michigan State as a whole, and now has helped to build connections within the community of Monteverde in Costa Rica. Michigan State University (RCAH) students have returned from our annual spring semester research abroad in Costa Rica, where they integrated arts and humanities approaches to deepen their connection with Costa Rican communities and address residential challenges head-on. Under the guidance of Program Director, Vincent Delgado they’re ready to share their impactful community research projects! ???? ?? Community of San Luis: Preserving and celebrating local culture in the face of tourism and immigration through digital methods. ?? LIFE Monteverde: Ensuring transformative learning experiences for volunteers. ?? Centro Cultural RioChante: Addressing integration issues for greater community participation. The historic house rescued and cared for by the Riochante Community Association over the past 8 years has finally been reclaimed by the Banco Nacional de Costa Rica, and now the community is fighting to preserve it. ?? ?? Why are spaces like Riochante, Centro Cultural important for the Monteverde community and the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities at Michigan State University? ?? Through Global Civic Engagement programs, Michigan State University fosters cultural exchange, and projects like Riochante are essential entities for horizontal and accessible cultural exchange for the entire population.?? Losing a space like Riochante would signify a significant cultural loss, not only for Monteverde but for all artistic and cultural communities that base their efforts on the well-being of their inhabitants.
