Expanding the film community in Michigan is at the heart of everything MiFIA does, which is why we’re always stoked when a new opportunity to connect and celebrate pops up. That’s what’s on tap Friday, Nov. 22 at Detroit Public Theatre. Detroit-based producer Vic Lord, in partnership with MiFIA, is excited to introduce film pros and buffs to “Streetlight Series” — a recurring showcase and celebration of Michigan- and Michigander-made art with a grassroots spirit and a party atmosphere. Tickets are $25, but film industry professionals get a 50% discount. Purchase here: https://lnkd.in/gx7YksUv.

Exciting things were happening in the U.P. over the weekend, where the Fresh Coast Film Festival took over Marquette from Oct. 17-20. FCFF is a documentary film festival celebrating the outdoor lifestyle, environmental importance and resilient spirit of the Great Lakes region. It's a great showcase for talented Michigan filmmakers with important stories to tell. MiFIA's Legislative Action Chair Alexander Page was on site in Marquette and spoke to an eager crowd of film professionals at the FCFF reception, providing updates on our work to expand media opportunities in our state. MiFIA board member Bill Latka played a visible role in Friday night's feature presentation "Troubled Water" a conservation film that beckons viewers to follow along on a transformative journey down the stunning coast of Lake Michigan.

A shout out to our newest board member, Jim Parrinello! Jim is the vice president of Teamsters Local 337. He has been a driving force within the union for 34 years, starting his career as a dock worker and freight driver. Jim’s dedication and passion for the Teamsters quickly propelled him into leadership roles. Lindsay Dougherty, the director of the Teamsters Motion Picture and Theatrical Division, recognized Jim’s expertise and appointed him as the Central Regional Representative for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT). Jim is deeply committed to expanding Michigan’s movie industry, tirelessly working to create more job opportunities for Michigan locals and help them thrive in the industry.

How is the Multimedia Jobs Act different from past production incentives? The MJA provides transferable tax credits, rather than rebates. What does this mean for Michigan? This means more Michigan productions — creating jobs, keeping our talent and boosting the state economy — without additional state expenditures. Want to learn more? Visit mifia.org.
