On September 25, 2024, Michigan Central, Newlab, and CODE313 hosted the second annual Youth Drone Day – an immersive workshop designed to inspire and educate Detroit students about the exciting world of drone technology, and its applications in aerial mobility, technology and coding. More than 300 students — aged 7 to 17 — from eight Detroit area schools participated in the event. They learned everything from aerial mapping missions and 3D photogrammetry to drone building and maintenance. They also had a ton of fun with drone art and drone basketball.

This week, Michigan Central, Newlab, and Newlab member Airspace Link, Inc. gathered leaders from the advanced air mobility community at the AAIR Forum for a day of multi-panel programming and the launch of the Advanced Aerial Innovation Region (AAIR). AAIR was created by Michigan Central and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to accelerate commercial drone development and position Michigan as a leader in next-generation aerial mobility. AAIR encompasses a 3-mile radius of tech surrounding Michigan Central which has been outfitted with shared infrastructure and services for Small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS) operators, manufacturers, and demand partners. This includes specialized infrastructure at Newlab and The Station which enables radar and tracking of drone activity and supports the development of a robust, secure aerial ecosystem. Newlab is proud to partner with Michigan Central to address accessibility, safety, tech equity, and regulatory challenges by designing first of a kind pilot programs for commercial drone applications, bringing advanced technologies together with industry and government partners to demonstrate the potential of this opportunity space across real-world use cases like: medical supply delivery, consumer goods transport, manufacturing logistics, and infrastructure inspection. With financial support and partnership from MDOT Aeronautics, Michigan Central provides resources for foundational physical and digital infrastructure, demand generation, community engagement, and skills training. Flight data from these operations will advance the goal of achieving Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS), a critical step in reducing barriers to commercial drone usage and enabling longer-range operations across Southeast Michigan. As founder of Detroit is the New Black, a concept shop and community platform, she has elevated underrepresented brands while celebrating Detroit’s creative culture. Before joining Michigan Central, Roslyn served as VP of Business Strategy & Development at Neighborhood Goods, leading partner acquisitions across various retail categories.

The State of Michigan has launched the Michigan Climate Investment Accelerator, a program designed to unlock billions in clean energy investments made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act. With $11 million in initial funding, the Accelerator aims to create jobs, lower energy costs, and align with the MI Healthy Climate Plan goals. Key Components: - Michigan Climate Investment Fund (MCIF): Provides grants and support to community lenders to secure federal funds. - Michigan Climate Investment Hub: Based in Detroit’s Michigan Central the Hub will connect stakeholders in clean energy financing. Through this initiative, local lenders may be able to offer green loans for energy efficiency and renewable projects.
