We have a story about that fluffy chick that hangs out down at the beach. The piping plover is a small migratory shorebird that nests and feeds along coastal sand and gravel beaches in North America. The baby pipers are a perfect sandy color to help them hide from predators. Having really great camouflage and a nest that's on the ground, puts these chicks in danger of us humans accidentally disrupting them. The piping plover population is on the decline, but there are ways you can help while you visit the beach: ??Follow the guidance on posted signs and respect all areas that are fenced off ??Do not approach piping plover nests ??If pets are permitted on beaches, keep them leashed and away from birds. One million ducks, half a million geese and almost 40,000 loons, 40,000 grebes, 100,000 swans, 30,000 cranes, and (and more!) return to nest across Alaska's 19.16 million-acre Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge annually. More great news for migratory birds! The U.S. Senate has approved the Migratory Birds of the Americas Conservation Enhancements Act (H.R.4389/S.4022), recently passed by the House of Representatives! This bill reauthorizes one of the nation’s most important bird laws: the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act (NMBCA), a successful federal grants program funding migratory bird research and habitat restoration throughout the Western Hemisphere. The direct funding from the NMBCA supports research and habitat restoration for vulnerable birds like the Piping Plover throughout their full annual cycle. American Bird Conservancy thanks the Senate for S.4022’s quick passage. The bill now heads to the President's desk to be signed into law!
