In celebration of National Book Week and International Literacy Day, I’ve been thinking about the vital importance of literacy and how Brisk Teaching supports it. We know that literacy in reading and writing is vital for countless personal and societal reasons. Literacy improves self-expression, problem-solving, creativity, and communication. Literacy has a major impact on educational, economic, and health outcomes.?Why do you think literacy is important? I’m proud of the many ways that Brisk supports literacy development. Teachers can quickly change the reading level or language of any text to differentiate for students. For early literacy development, teachers can create decodable texts by simply entering the phonemes or phonics skills at the center of the lesson. Timely, targeted feedback is crucial to develop students as writers. With Brisk, it’s never been faster to provide the high-quality feedback on student work that makes a difference. Literacy should be a right, not a privilege so it’s essential that teachers around the world have all the tools they need at their fingertips. Happy National Book Week! Smartphone Bans Part One As students and educators return to campus, school rules around smartphones may have changed. Due to concerns about the negative effects of smartphones on school safety, mental health, social skill development and learning outcomes, 13 states and some schools have banned smartphones. Lawmakers and educators want to increase students’ abilities to focus and communicate face-to-face.?Today, Good Morning America explored the issue from multiple perspectives at Clarke Central HS in Athens, GA where phones are collected at the start of each class. Across the country, a range of new policies are trying to address these challenges. Some require that smartphones remain out of sight during instruction. Some collect them at the start of each day, while others ban them entirely. It’s true that carrying around a mini-computer with addictive apps and the ability to constantly connect with peers can no doubt distract students from learning. Adults too struggle with limiting cell phone use. Yet students still need to develop a healthy relationship with technologies from smartphones to AI to whatever comes next. How do we teach students to use technology as a tool to enhance learning and quality of life and avoid its harmful effects? What better place than schools to engage students in critically analyzing the ways that tech tools affect them? Smartphones aren't going away. Students need to receive robust instruction on appropriate and transformative uses of technology and gain autonomy as they demonstrate mastery of digital citizenship standards and move toward adulthood.
