Ten members of our Michael Baker International Wolf Pack are hard at work building a 311-foot-long suspension bridge in Rwanda, Africa, in partnership with Bridges to Prosperity (B2P), a nonprofit organization dedicated to constructing footbridges in remote, underdeveloped areas of the world, creating better access to economic, educational and health care opportunities. The team arrived in Rwanda’s capital city, Kigali, on Saturday, February 22. On Sunday, they met B2P staff and traveled about an hour to reach their accommodations near the project site in the Gicumbi District. So far, the team has painted and erected both towers, pulled and set the four main suspension cables, bent rebar and prepped cables for the decking, lifted the suspenders and floor beams, and installed a safety cable on the bridge as it starts to take shape. Each day, more and more children from the surrounding communities show up at the project site to watch the team at work. Our colleagues have had the chance to meet members of the community who will use the bridge once it is complete and have visited a local school, GS Nyabisiga, which serves more than 1,200 students in the area. The team will spend the next week completing the suspension bridge and exemplifying how We Make a Difference for the communities we serve. The ITE Met Section is a regional division of ITE, an educational and scientific association of transportation specialists responsible for improving mobility and safety for all users. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) initiated engineering and environmental studies to deliver the transportation element of the Lakefront West project. One of the goals of the project was to enhance neighborhood connectivity with the Lake Erie Waterfront across Norfolk Southern’s (NS) Chicago Line and the West Shoreway. In partnership with ODOT and the City of Cleveland, Michael Baker International developed a plan to convert the existing Cleveland Memorial Shoreway from a six-lane, limited-access highway to a six-lane, low-speed, pedestrian-friendly facility. As part of this conversion, the Michael Baker team studied eight access points to introduce new or modified at-grade intersections that connect the neighborhoods to the new facility and Lake Erie.
