It is with tremendous sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Global Initiatives’ friend and colleague Donald N. Nelson. Don served in the Office of International Programs at Miami University for 42 years before retiring as Administrator Emeritus in 2003. During his distinguished career in international education he served as President and was on the Board of Directors of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, was Chair of NAFSA Region VI, and was a founding member of the Ohio International Consortium (OIC), among many other roles. Don’s contributions to international education were recognized by the OIC in 2003 with the establishment of the Donald N. Nelson Scholarship for Study Abroad and by Global Initiatives in 2019 with the launching of the Donald Nelson Award for Outstanding Student Support. Miami University is proud to be part of the BridgeUSA Ukrainian Academic Fellows Program, with the Havighurst Center being one of only 23 academic programs in the U.S. to host a scholar through this initiative! Amid the war in Ukraine, we are honored to welcome Borys Prydalnyi from Lutsk National Technical University. Through Miami’s Global Initiatives and the U.S. State Department, Prydalnyi has found a temporary academic home here at Miami, where he continues his research and engages with our students and faculty. Anastasija Mladenovska '26 recently conducted field research in Belgrade, Serbia, where she connected with displaced Russians affected by the war in Ukraine. The U.S. Department of State became interested in her research findings because of the significant social, political, and economic impacts that diasporic populations can have on the places they settle within. Her fluency in Russian, Serbian, and French, along with her deep understanding of Eastern Europe, helped her gather valuable insights. Anastasija was featured at the 2024 Diplomacy Lab Fair in Washington D.C., where she networked with Foreign Service officers and civil servants. Her advice? "Do what you're passionate about, start conversations, go out and get stories, and share them with others. Thanks to the Global Travel Fund, Dr. Thurmer's 11-day trip to Brazil became a reality. From August 19-28, 2024, Dr. Thurmer had the opportunity to teach at three esteemed institutions in Brazil! During this trip, Dr. Thurmer engaged with almost 100 participants and even performed a recital! His workshops led to ongoing interest among students, with several expressing a desire to pursue master's degrees at Miami University. He also delivered a recital and workshop at the Escola de Música de Brasília, working with a diverse group of musicians, and concluded with a masterclass at the Suzuki Center of Brasília.
