Spotlight on Myrlande Constant: Revolutionizing Drapo Art Myrlande Constant is a renowned Haitian textile artist, celebrated for her mastery of Drapo—a form of Haitian Vodou art inspired by the French word drapeau (meaning "flag"). Constant transformed the art form by incorporating intricate beadwork and sequined panels, becoming a trailblazer in a field traditionally dominated by men. Her work is showcased in prestigious institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). Career Highlights: In 2019, she was featured at the Faena Festival during Miami Art Week, where her piece "The Last Supper" reimagined da Vinci’s work through a Vodou lens. In 2012, she was commissioned by UCLA Fowler Museum and the Greene Foundation to create "Haiti madi 12 janvye 2010," honoring the 2010 Haiti earthquake. In the 1990s, she opened her own workshop, training a new generation of beaded flag artists, including Roudy Azor, Amina Simeon, Mireille Delice, Evelyn Alcide, and Fils LaFleur. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Brazil, France, Jamaica, England, and the United States. Upcoming Exhibitions: The Spiritual World of Haiti – February 28 – April 26, 2025 | Fort Gansevoort, New York DRAPO – February 1 – May 4, 2025 | Figge Art Museum, Iowa Constant’s work reflects the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of Haiti. Her groundbreaking approach continues to inspire and redefine contemporary textile art. Artwork: “La Sirene” by Myrlande Constant

Meet Mary Ann Carroll (1940–2019), a trailblazing artist who defied the odds. As the only woman among the original Florida Highwaymen—a group of self-taught Black artists—Carroll captured Florida’s landscapes in bold, vivid strokes. In an era when segregation kept Black artists out of galleries, she took her art directly to the people, selling paintings door-to-door and from car trunks across the state. Her legacy includes: The only female Highwaymen artist, balancing her career while raising seven children. Induction into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004. Presentation of her work to First Lady Michelle Obama in 2011. Current and Upcoming Exhibitions: Mary Ann Carroll: Queen of the Highway – Orlando City Hall’s Terrace Gallery (April 4, 2024 – March 31, 2025) A Disappearing Landscape: Art of the Florida Highwaymen – Flamingo Gardens, Davie, FL (January 4 – February 23, 2025) Annual Florida Highwaymen Exhibition – A.E. Celebrating Dr. Nelson L. Adams III! ?? A huge congratulations to Miami MoCAAD board member Dr. Nelson L. Adams III (Nelson L. Adams, M.D.) for receiving the Alumni Award for Distinguished Postgraduate Achievement from Howard University! His unwavering commitment to Black maternal health continues to leave a lasting impact. As we honor Women’s History Month, we recognize the urgent need to improve maternal health access—especially for Black women, who continue to experience the highest maternal mortality rates in the U.S. In the 1990s, Dr. Adams founded the Maternal Child Health Initiative in South Florida, providing quality prenatal care to women—particularly Medicaid recipients who often faced challenges in finding providers. While the initiative is no longer active, its impact continues to be felt in the lives of the families it served. Beyond his advocacy, Dr. Adams is also: Chairman of the Board, Sunshine State Health Plan Trustee Emeritus, Barry University Member, Orange Bowl Committee ??
