Miami-Dade TPO Executive Director,?Aileen Bouclé, AICP, and TPO Chief-Transportation Planning,?Christopher Rosenberg, AICP, attended the “Silver Tsunami” conference at the FAU Boca Raton campus, hosted by?South Florida Regional Planning Council (SFRPC)?and?Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council (TCRP). One of the topics of discussion was transportation solutions for seniors which included focus on adaptations needed for services and infrastructure to meet the needs of an aging population.? ? Southeast Florida’s senior population is booming, mirroring national and worldwide trends. Referred to as the “Silver Tsunami,” residents 65 years of age and older are projected to number more than 2.13 million in the seven-county region by 2050 - an increase of 54.5% since 2021. Of these residents, 520,000 will be 85 years of age or older - an increase of 133.6% from 2025 to 2050. ? Southeast Florida’s communities are already struggling to support the needs of the region’s elders. As the general population and workforce continue to age and live longer, Southeast Florida’s competitiveness will depend on how we plan for and support our seniors. ?
