Last Friday, the Council on Social Entrepreneurship (COSE) had the incredible opportunity to learn and ideate with Necco around a critical issue: the challenges faced by foster families and the broader foster care system. The innovation workshop kicked off with insightful introductions from Mark Davis and Dr. Greg Dern, setting the stage with ideation tools like the Lotus Blossom, "How Might We...", and Reverse Brainstorming. Their insights into the foster care industry illuminated two pressing issues: 1. A shortage of foster families 2. Limited support for those families who do step up With this foundation, two teams of five brainstormed actionable solutions that could make a difference: Team 1's idea: Corporate Involvement in Foster Care: Engage large corporations to offer paid leave for employees to attend foster parent training. This initiative would give potential foster parents a low-pressure opportunity to explore fostering, while also reducing burnout among existing foster families, and fostering stronger community ties. Team 2 took this prompt in 5 different directions Idea one: Healthy Habit Workshops: Funded by private sector companies to support foster kids and families. Idea two: Risk Profiling: use insurance "risk scores" to encourage fostering, creative a profit-driven incentive. Idea three: Foster Kids & Animal Shelters: pair foster kids with support animals to provide emotional stability and companionship Idea four: Private Bank Account & Benefits: offer foster families financial tools with bonuses and community-focused rewards. Idea five: Creative Funding Streams: Generate funding through bonds, sports betting, or other creative methods, with having the proceeds supporting foster care. The session was closed with remarks from Mark Davis, who reemphasized that awareness is the first step. Building a sense of community and breaking down stigmas around fostering is essential to creating lasting change. A huge thank you to everyone who participated in this meaningful innovation workshop. Stay tuned for more COSE information to come!
