A huge thank you to everyone who joined us this past Saturday at our?Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces?for Ocean Conservancy's 2024?#InternationalCoastalCleanup! Your dedication to keeping our coastlines and parks clean is truly inspiring! Together, we made a real difference for our environment and?#OurCounty! #tbt : Pitching a Tent in the Miami Hammock This photograph, featured in the book "Terra Florida: a sketch of the east coast" (1898), likely captures the modest dwelling of an early pioneer who had recently ventured into the expansive wilderness of Biscayne Country. During the nascent days of Miami, these seemingly simple tents held greater significance. The Homestead Act of 1862 aimed to encourage the establishment of family farms in remote and challenging areas of the country, promoting settlement and commerce. Many individuals eagerly seized the opportunity. To claim a 160-acre parcel as promised by the law, one merely needed to pay a nominal filing fee and physically be present. This fee totaled $18, comprising $10 for a temporary claim on the land, a $2 commission for the land agent, and an additional $6 final payment to obtain an official 'patent' on the land at the conclusion of the terms. During this period, the 'Miami hammock' covered the Biscayne Bay coast. The scene in the photograph reflects a time when only a tranquil Fort Dallas and a handful of structures at the mouth of the Miami River coexisted. The arrival of Flagler's train in 1896 and the construction of the grand Royal Palm Hotel marked the transformation of this dense hammock, unparalleled in the world, into a landscape adorned with rooftops.
