"Horror films draw us into a world where our deepest anxieties are laid bare. They illuminate the darker recesses of the human psyche – ones that we often prefer to ignore." Kerry Hegarty, associate professor of Media, Journalism and Film, has published an article, "The ‘Death Mother’: Horror’s most unnerving villain," with The Conversation. Hegarty delves into our darkest fears and uncovers that what scares us the most is often something very close to home. Read it here: https://bit.ly/4eKgdCO

Andrew Peck, associate professor of strategic communication in the Dept of Media, Journalism, and Film, has been awarded the 2024 Chicago Folklore Prize for his book, “Digital Legend and Belief: The Slender Man, Folklore, and the Media." This prize is the oldest international award recognizing excellence in folklore scholarship, and this year there were over 40 entries. “This is a monumental recognition for Andrew’s work,” said Rosemary Pennington, department chair. “He’s been sort of situated at the intersection of media studies and folklore, and when scholars sit at those crossroads, it can be hard to get appreciated fully. The fact that Miami has allowed for this creativity and intersectional approach to research is really important, and the recognition of that is really important.” https://bit.ly/3ZjBL3J

Another outstanding Career Event to Help Miami University College of Arts and Science students Explore, Prepare, and Connect to opportunities! ?????Yesterday, I partnered with the Miami University’s Department of Political Science to bring alumna Judge Michelle J. Sheehan, her husband Judge Brendan Sheehan, and Jason R. Bristol to Oxford for another career chat, “Careers in Law: A discussion with Judges & Attorneys”. We did a similar event two years ago that exposed students to ways to get involved via internships, volunteering, and shadowing. They’ve even had a few Miamians intern with them since then. ?? ??Special shoutout to our faculty partners Bryan Marshall, Matt Arbuckle, and others for the opportunity to partner together for student success and Heidi Rybolt and Cheryl Chafin for taking care of event logistics! ?? #CareerSuccess #CareerDevelopment #CareersInLaw #MiamiOH #PoliticalScience #LegalCareers
