Sonia Huynh I PE joined our MHP team in 2018 as a Project Engineer. Over the last few years, Sonia has shown great dedication to her role in leading and managing a vast range of projects while also building client relations. She is now one of MHP’s Project Managers in our Design & Renovation group. Her most recently completed projects include the Saddleback Memorial Women’s Health Pavilion and the South Shore Elementary School Classroom Building which she played a key role as the structural project engineer. Currently, she is working on the Cerritos College Student Services and Administration Building which is under construction. In addition, she is in the process of completing construction documents for the College of San Mateo Student Housing and College of the Siskiyous Student Housing which are expected to start construction later this year. Sonia is also?the Client Manager for our On-Call Contracts with NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pomona Unified School District, and Cal State University, Fullerton. She is also part of MHP’s SE2050 Commitment to Sustainability as a committee member. Outside of the office, Sonia enjoys hiking, cooking, reading, cheering on the Lakers and Dodgers, and spending time with her partner and her husky. We are excited for Sonia’s continued opportunities to grow in her role at MHP as well as her commitment to making buildings safe. #mhpse #employeespotlight #projectmanager #makingbuildingssafe

Honored to see one of MHP Structural Engineers NDC retrofit projects pictured here! Always a pleasure working with Taylor Devices, Inc.! The project involved the addition of 14 FVDs, FRP column strengthening, FRP diaphragm strengthening, and lots of hard work from Chris Stone, S.E. and Lance Kenyon, M.S., S.E.
The “Inventory of Non-ductile Concrete Buildings in High Seismic Risk Areas of California” identifies 40,000 Non-ductile Concrete Buildings in the state. These buildings are schools, apartments, hospitals and office buildings. Built prior to the 1976 Uniform Building Code, these buildings have limited or poorly designed reinforcing steel that make them particularly vulnerable to significant damage or collapse. For this reason, several cities have enacted ordinances to enhance the seismic safety of NDC buildings. Los Angeles has a Non-Ductile Concrete (NDC) Retrofit Program requiring owners of these buildings to evaluate and retrofit their structures if needed. Santa Monica and West Hollywood have similar requirements. Other major cities like San Francisco are in the process of enacting ordinances. Adding supplemental damping with Fluid Viscous Dampers can effectively protect NDC building columns from damage or sudden failure. Unlike many other retrofit options, dampers have flexibility in placement and, adding dampers typically avoids foundation work. Check out Taylor Devices’ updated design guide regarding the use of dampers for retrofits of Nonductile Concrete Moment Frame structures: https://lnkd.in/eJXrXgBr
