Google's Gemini 1.5 is easily of the most capable and impressive models I have ever worked with. This past weekend, seeing how 300+ hackers from across North America used it to build novel solutions to real problems was, somehow, even more impressive! It was a huge honor to help enable the collaboration between MHacks and Google AI — one that culminated in a 36 hour AI hackathon this weekend at the University of Michigan. We saw AI products that empowered blind folks to interface with their environment, innovated in astronomy education, guided the elderly in confusing web navigations, and so much more! I could not be more grateful to the incredible members of both the MHacks and Google AI teams. Throughout the weekend, hackers heard from University of Michigan President Santa J. Ono, who, among other things, emphasized the University's commitment to the research and development of safe, powerful AI. We also were blessed to hear from Bakary Diarrassouba about the inspirational applications of Gemini AI that have been happening over the last few months. Working with Google also meant distinguished workshops for hackers to attend; Josh Gordon showed how builders can leverage Gemini to its full capacity, taking them through the superpowers that come with Google AI Studio. Meanwhile, Raiza Martin and Tim Gleason highlighted NotebookLM, an AI-powered research and writing assistant. Through it, they demonstrated just versatile and feature-rich a Gemini-supported project can be! Again, I am so proud of everyone that was involved to make this happen. Us here at the MHacks team can't wait to work with Google and University of Michigan again. We continue to commit to creating hackathons that solve real problems from real people.

I am excited to share that Shaheer Khan, President of Imagine Software Club at MSU, and I won "Most creative use of GitHub" on our hackathon project during MHacks at University of Michigan! App2's stack includes Nextjs and graphql on the front end, node.js backend, and mongodb atlas for our database, all hosted as docker containers on Google Cloud services. Our project analyzes your GitHub repositories and your personal site to see how your code stacks up to uther developers! We trained and used OpenAI model to grade random repositories of yours and compare them to industry standard. We also run a generic linter on files to see how many warnings and errors are thrown. Lastly, with your github, we use OpenAI to grade and comment on how effective your commit messages are. All of these metrics are then combined to give a grade out of 100 along with AI generated comments. We also use lighthouse's api to run an analysis on your personal site, giving number ratings for categories such as SEO, Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices, and PWA. We plan on working with other members of Imagine Software Club at MSU to continue the development of App2 so club member application reviews are streamlined in the future. You can view our devpost here: https://lnkd.in/giZm2UAg In the picture you will see Shaheer and I accepting our award from the MLH representative. #hackathon #frontend #backend #nextjs #ai #googlecloud #mongodb #mongodbatlas #docker #lighthouse #github

MHacks 16 ? After a wonderful post-MHacks meeting with the team, I can confidently say that the “job is finished.” From toying with ideas of judging with graph theory to filling the Dude basement with the buzz of late-night hacking to last-minute crisis aversion with the “Avengers” (M-vengers?), MHacks was nothing short of eventful in the best way possible.? Beyond the metrics—500+ hackers, 15+ sponsors, 60+ mentors and judges—MHacks was (and will always be) about the people. Ideation, execution, and everything in between was handled by our exceptional team: Harry Sanders, Kevin Wang, Brian Travis, Desola Fujah,?April F.,?Zain Zai,?Derek Barry Miller,?Phoebe Oh,?Renee T.,?Blaire Pang, Amy Jun, Meghan Joshi,?Deric Dinu Daniel,?Shrey Pandya,?Cooper Saye,?Pranay Gupta, and many more. Our extraordinary co-directors, Adviti Mishra and Spencer Goodwin, were the driving force behind it all. Well done, team. The day-of experience would have been incomplete without outstanding mentorship and support from a few of our own:?Samay Shamdasani,?Elliot Klein,?Varun J.,?Dheera Vuppala,?Mukundh Murthy,?Navya Kumar,?Lucas Biondo-Savin,?Yile (Akira) Li,?Tyrus Yeo,?Jonathan Alpert,?Sohavni Singh,?Raghav Bhat,?Hariharan Chidambaram,?Anirudh Ramprasad,?Alexandru Beloiu, Peter Wu, and many many others. A huge thank you to representatives from?Warp,?Caterpillar Inc.,?Capital One,?Grainger,?Ramp,?Optiver,?Qualcomm,?Ford Motor Company,?BNY Mellon,?Roboflow,?optiMize,?University of Michigan College of Engineering,?University of Michigan Information and Technology Services, and MLH. Their efforts enriched the hacker experience and transformed MHacks into so much more than a hackathon. A sincere thank you to our keynote speakers Ali Partovi?and?Alex Lieberman, who kicked off MHacks 16 with tales from their entrepreneurial journeys. Their inspiring words not only set the tone for the weekend but fueled our hackers’ innovative spirits. Thank you to our volunteers, mentors, and judges who dedicated their weekend to MHacks. Without their support in the most critical moments, the event would not have been remotely possible. And of course, thank you to our hackers, who channeled their passion, curiosity, and humor throughout the night to create the next big thing. MHacks 16 marked the revival of one of the world's most iconic hackathons, continuing a legacy that began in 2013. Let’s continue bringing purpose-driven builders from across the world together at MHacks 17. Job's not finished ??

I'm excited to announce my recent win at MHacks 16 here at the University of Michigan! My team and I created a productivity monitoring program that uses computer vision to track eye movement and syncs with screen usage and fitbit data to gather analytics about productivity, study habits, and sleep data as well as gives AI generated personalized recommendations. We ended up winning both 1st place in the Hardware Main Track and 3rd in the UMich ITS Best Use of Generative AI Track. I had a great time at my first Hackathon and I look forward to participating in another soon! You can view my project here: https://lnkd.in/g9bjKM9n

Social Impact Challenge Winner MHacks 16 ?? I am thrilled to share that I had the opportunity to participate in MHacks-16, hosted by the University of Michigan. Along with my team members, Ishaan Dey, Saurav Telge, and Krish Modi, we decided to address a challenge that is both socially significant and deeply personal – aiding individuals who are on the early stages of getting affected by Alzheimer's disease or dementia. One of the most heart-wrenching aspects of Alzheimer's is the gradual loss of precious memories, particularly those involving close family and friends. To tackle this, we developed 'CogniCare' – a tool designed to help people with Alzheimer's retain their connection to their loved ones. CogniCare enables users to record their daily interactions and, through facial recognition technology, constructs a 'memory dashboard'. This dashboard presents a series of prompts designed to assist users in recalling and revisiting their everyday interactions. It helps them identify the people they meet, recognize names, understand their relationships, and remember details from their interactions. We used OpenCV for facial recognition, OpenAI's GPT-4 for image embeddings, Next.js for the frontend and flask for the backend. Feel free to check out our project here : https://lnkd.in/gd9MeBfF During this event, I had the chance to meet and interact with Ali Partovi, CEO of Neo. His speech: “On failure and fear, imposter syndrome and risk-taking” was very insightful. The keynote speech of Alex Lieberman, CoFounder of Morning Brew who shared his story about his journey was very enlightening. I also had the chance to attend a lecture by Amulya Parmar whose discussion on startups and the problems worth solving was very informative and interesting . I extend my heartfelt gratitude to optiMize, Abby Liang, George Kolarchick and Arvin Yaple for encouraging our idea and for empowering students to transform ideas into impactful solutions.? I am also deeply thankful to MHacks directors Adviti Mishra, Derek Barry Miller, Spencer Goodwin, Kevin Wang and all the volunteers for organizing such a meaningful event and for providing us with a platform to develop a project with profound social impact. ?? Thanks to University of Michigan Information and Technology Services for fostering hackathon culture. #SocialImpact #Innovation #MHacks

Two weeks ago, I attended MHacks 16 at the University of Michigan. Our team placed second in the University of Michigan ITS Generative AI and Teaching & Learning Data category. Canvas layouts are a universal problem—our team, hailing from multiple nationalities, bonded over our frustration with unnavigable Canvas layouts. From scattered assignment files to unorganized submission slots, Canvas can be confusing. We created our project to help students to be able to talk with Canvas and get the precise answer they need at lightning speed. More importantly, we provide critical accessibility support for students. Canvassist is a personalized assistant for all Canvas needs. Students can navigate to Canvassist, select their course, and begin asking questions specific to each coursework! Our integrated AI contains all pertinent information about student coursework, such as assignments and syllabus and will accurately answer any questions presented. Additionally, we cut down inefficiency by allowing students to submit files directly from Canvassist. Navigate to the submission page, select your coursework, and a list of available submissions will be available to choose and?instantly submit. Our software’s frontend utilizes Streamlit for a quick and slick design. We used Canvas’ API on the backend to retrieve data and MongoDB as a vector database. We used Langchain to embed prompts and assignment data and compare them using the OpenAI API. We return a response to the front end using Fast API from the comparison. It was great working with our team, Ri Hong, David Mazur, Toan Bui! We accomplished much more than I expected in 24 hours!
