Google's Gemini 1.5 is easily of the most capable and impressive models I have ever worked with. This past weekend, seeing how 300+ hackers from across North America used it to build novel solutions to real problems was, somehow, even more impressive! It was a huge honor to help enable the collaboration between MHacks and Google AI — one that culminated in a 36 hour AI hackathon this weekend at the University of Michigan. We saw AI products that empowered blind folks to interface with their environment, innovated in astronomy education, guided the elderly in confusing web navigations, and so much more! I could not be more grateful to the incredible members of both the MHacks and Google AI teams. Throughout the weekend, hackers heard from University of Michigan President Santa J. Ono, who, among other things, emphasized the University's commitment to the research and development of safe, powerful AI. We also were blessed to hear from Bakary Diarrassouba about the inspirational applications of Gemini AI that have been happening over the last few months. Working with Google also meant distinguished workshops for hackers to attend; Josh Gordon showed how builders can leverage Gemini to its full capacity, taking them through the superpowers that come with Google AI Studio. Meanwhile, Raiza Martin and Tim Gleason highlighted NotebookLM, an AI-powered research and writing assistant. Through it, they demonstrated just versatile and feature-rich a Gemini-supported project can be! Again, I am so proud of everyone that was involved to make this happen. Us here at the MHacks team can't wait to work with Google and University of Michigan again. We continue to commit to creating hackathons that solve real problems from real people.
