Did you know that by 1842, there were only 30 people living in Atlanta, GA? It wasn't until William Helme established the Atlanta Gas Light Company in 1856, illuminating the previously dark city with gas streetlamps, that the population reached approximately 9,500 people by 1860. Helme's MGP was destroyed in 1864 during the Civil War and his gas streetlamps were replaced by electric lights in 1881. While short-lived, Helme's MGP was crucial for Atlanta's early development.
