Supporting military and veteran families through research and outreach.
关于我们
The Military Family Research Institute is located at Purdue University, one of the world’s premiere research universities. Our work as a research and outreach organization evolved over time. In 1993, Purdue’s Center for Families was established within the department of Human Development and Family Studies in the College of Health and Human Sciences. Its mission was to help improve the quality of life for families. After seven years of working on behalf of families, the Center created the MFRI with funding from the Department of Defense. Its original mission was almost entirely research-based. MFRI's current mission is to extend and strengthen the ability of military and civilian organizations to help military families. We do this by designing and implementing outreach activities that assist military families, primarily within but also beyond Indiana, and by conducting research with and for military families that generates important new knowledge about their experiences. With funding from Lilly Endowment Inc., the DOD, Sesame Workshop and other partners, MFRI expanded its mission to include outreach and programming. Collaborative partnerships increase the breadth and depth of MFRI's impact. Opinions expressed on this site do not necessarily represent the official views of Purdue University or MFRI. Join us in celebrating the research team behind "Exploring the importance of predisposing, enabling, and need factors for promoting Veteran engagement in mental health therapy for post-traumatic stress: a multiple methods study," one of the honorees for the 2024 Barbara Thompson Excellence in Research on Military and Veteran Families Award! ?? Congratulations to Megan Shepherd-Banigan, Kate Sheahan, Princess E. Ackland, Valerie Smith, Barbara Bokhour, Shirley Glynn, Patrick Calhoun, David Edelman, Courtney Van Houtven, Hollis Weidenbacher, Madeleine Eldridge, Abigail Shapiro and Karen M. Stechuchak. Their groundbreaking study, published in BMC Psychiatry , found that while a veteran's medical need for health care was the most influential reason for care initiation and retention, the attitudes and support from the veteran's family members and friends also mattered. ?? Learn more about the study itself and how these findings can be used in a practical setting during the Thompson Award event on December 9 at the Association of the United States Army - AUSA headquarters in Arlington, VA. The event is free and open to the public. Don't miss out! Register now: mfri.purdue.edu/thompson #MFRI #AUSA #ThompsonAward #MilitaryFamilyResearch

Join us in congratulating Courtland Hyatt, Max Halvorson and Sarah Campbell, some of the researchers who will be honored at the event for the prestigious 2024 Barbara Thompson Award for Excellence in Research on Military and Veteran Families Award! ?? Their study, "A daily diary study of the romantic partner relationship dynamics associated with anger and other posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms" published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress, offers new insight into the relationship dynamics between male service members with PTSD and their female partners. The study looked at 64 couples and found participants who reported higher levels of PTSD symptoms tended to experience more relationship challenges. Join us on December 9 at the Association of the United States Army - AUSA headquarters to celebrate these researchers and discuss their findings. We'll explore the real-world impact of their work and how it can drive positive change for military and veteran families. ???Learn more and register now at mfri.purdue.edu/thompson #MFRI #AUSA #ThompsonAward #MilitaryFamilies International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS)
