Your new laptop arrives. You eagerly unpack it. You likely don’t think about where its components come from. Or that in Intel’s supply chain, there are many tiers of suppliers. (The mines that supply tantalum ore to Intel are in tier 12!) In an excerpt from his book “The New Lunar Society: An Enlightenment Guide to the Next Industrial Revolution,” MIT professor of aerospace engineering?David Mindell begins to unpack the marvels and mysteries of modern supply chains: https://lnkd.in/eA-MDJMU #mit #manufacturing Link to the book: https://lnkd.in/gahVrPpC

Join us Thursday, March 20 at 3:30pm at MIT (45-230) to hear Manufacturing@MIT Distinguished Speaker and the LEGO Group COO Carsten Rasmussen’s talk, “When it Comes to Manufacturing, the LEGO Group isn’t Playing Around.” We’ve all built worlds out of LEGO bricks when we were young. But few of us have thought about what it takes to manufacture and distribute several hundred million LEGO sets each year. Mr. Rasmussen will take us inside the LEGO Group and discuss its efforts to expand capacity, strengthen its distribution center network, drive productivity through automation, and make the company more sustainable. “Revitalizing and expanding the manufacturing workforce is critical to the U.S. economic and competitiveness agenda,” MIT professor of practice Elisabeth Reynolds said in her recent testimony before the US House’s Energy and Commerce subcommittee. “The US could face a shortage of nearly two million manufacturing workers by 2033. The best way to avert a shortfall is to upskill current workers, which would make them more productive and extend their careers, as well as attract a new generation into the sector through use of advanced technologies.” Barbara Humpton of Siemens, Jeff Kinder of Autodesk, and Jason Oxman of the Information Technology Industry Council also testified. You can find the entire session at https://lnkd.in/ekWgAA-X.
