On this International Women's Day, we invite you to meet one of the newest women to join our team, Nicollet Garage Stockkeeper Terease Huttner. How did you begin your career with Metro Transit??? I've been an inventory controls specialist for more than 20 years. I was looking for a part-time job because the cost of living is outrageous, and I’m a single mom of a 17-year-old son. I ended up switching my full-time job as a hospital inventory planner to part-time and going full-time here at Metro Transit. What were your career goals and what steps did you take to achieve them??? I went to school for business administration. I’ve always enjoyed working with numbers. I went for accounting but realized I don’t do well stuck at a desk all day doing bookkeeping. The other piece of accounting is going out physically and checking inventory, verifying the numbers and working with auditors. Every time an auditor came through, I had to show him how to count or do an inventory, so I thought I might as well do that. I worked accounts payable at a department store as my initial job out of school before getting laid off. Looking through ads for temp positions, I stumbled across an inventory position in a warehouse. What advice do you have for others who want to take on more or different responsibilities??? Be willing to be flexible, open to new things, and willing to learn. I am always wanting to learn.???? Why would you recommend Metro Transit as an employer?? The union and management form a good support system. I feel there is a good support system throughout Metro Transit. You don’t get that at a lot of companies. I noticed that during the interviewing process. Communication is a key piece of it. They had a team doing the interviewing, and they were good at communicating with each other and me. That’s important.?? Looking for a rewarding career with outstanding benefits? We’re growing and need you to join our team that keeps the metro moving. Learn more and apply: https://lnkd.in/gQSUVTb5

After many years as a union carpenter,?Nathan Michaelson?needed a change.?"Construction is a feast-or-famine business,” Nathan said. “Some years, you're making great money. Other years, you're just waiting for the next paycheck."? Coming to Metro Transit, he thought, would provide more stability and a better future for his family.?? That first year, his pay was a step down from what he’d made in construction. But as the years went on, his salary increased, and with it, his confidence in the decision.?"By the third or fourth year, I was making more than I ever did in construction,” Nathan said. “It was worth it.”? While his career change began with long hours and weekend shifts, with time he found balance and could spend more time with his wife and children.?“My son was young when I started, and at that age, kids don’t know the difference between a Saturday and a Tuesday,” he said. “So, we made it work.”? Three years into his newfound career, he also found opportunity to grow in his career, earning a role as a relief instructor.?“The more I worked with people, the more I realized I enjoyed helping others succeed,” he said. “When you help someone improve, it feels like you’ve made a real difference.”? After 13 years at Metro Transit, Nathan now looks forward to finding other positions to help his fellow operators succeed, like a full-time instructor or a garage coordinator.?? “I’m just waiting for a few retirements, and I’ll be there,” he said. “It’s a good place to work. The pay is solid, the benefits are great, and it gives you a future. This is where I see myself retiring.”? As he plans his next step at Metro Transit, he reminds us that it’s never too late to change course to discover a new path.?“I didn’t expect it, but it’s become the right fit,” he says. “The stability, the support, the opportunity to grow—it’s everything I needed.”? Over the past three decades, Nicholas Greco has served as a 911 dispatcher, mobile intensive care unit paramedic, flight paramedic, Brooklyn Park firefighter and captain, and tactical medical operator with the Brooklyn Park SWAT team. As he looked toward the latter part of his career, he wanted to find a place where he put his skills and knowledge to use in a less physically demanding job. In 2022, he came to Metro Transit to work in the Transit Control Center, dispatching police officers and assisting operators over the radio. Recently, he stepped outside his usual role to teach Transit Rider Investment Program (TRIP) Agents how to administer Narcan, which can prevent opioid overdoses from becoming fatal. TRIP Agents carry Narcan and have used it on several occasions. “When an opportunity came up to help instruct TRIP agents on Narcan, I thought it would be an excellent way to utilize my experience with a lifesaving skill that is desperately needed,” Nicholas said. Thank you, Nicholas, for sharing your experience and to all our frontline workers who are there when people need them the most. If you observe as medical emergency, immediately call or text 911. Emergency call buttons on trains and at stations can also be used to reach dispatchers at any time. If you’re interested in becoming a TRIP Agent, learn more and apply by Tuesday, Feb. 25. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gF2bgmvN Applications for Transit Control Center Supervisor are also being accepted now through Monday, Feb. 24. After earning a degree in criminal justice and spending 14 months as a Community Service Officer, Faysal Geylani will begin the Metro Transit Police Department’s academy next week, the next step in his path to becoming a sworn police officer. He does so with fresh affirmation that he’s answering a calling to serve his community. In late January, Geylani was on patrol in downtown Minneapolis when a call went out about an unresponsive woman down at the Nicollet Mall Station. The first to arrive on scene, Geylani said the woman wasn’t breathing and had only a slight pulse. He administered Narcan and performed CPR until medics and police officers arrived. “I always knew in the back of my head that a call like this would come and that I’d need to be prepared for it,” he said. Geylani’s actions likely saved the woman’s life. They also served a reminder of the powerful responsibilities he looks forward to assuming as a police officer. “This experience changed me forever and also affirmed my calling to become a police officer,” he said. Geylani’s interest in law enforcement traces back to his three years as a bus operator out of Nicollet Garage. In that role, he often interacted with Metro Transit police officers and came to admire how they interacted with his peers, riders, and the community. After working in traffic enforcement and as a security officer, he returned to Metro Transit as a CSO because he could work a flexible schedule while earning his degree, get hands-on experience, and give back in a new way. “Every job I’ve had has been community-driven, and I didn’t think there was any better place to start my career than here at Metro Transit,” he said. Interested in gaining experience while you earn your law enforcement degree? Apply for our Community Service Officer (CSO) Pathways Program, which provides participants tuition support and the chance to work part-time as a CSO. Learn more and apply at https://lnkd.in/gxeSJPVR

We’re committed to providing a consistently safe, clean, and welcoming experience on transit. A cornerstone of our work is strengthening the official presence on transit, which is why we’re so excited about a new partnership with the St. Paul Downtown Improvement District. Starting next week, Safety Ambassadors from the DID will become a regular presence at light rail stations and surrounding bus stops downtown. These ambassadors will act as another set of eyes for public safety professionals while cleaning up trash and providing directions.
