关于我们

The Methanol Institute serves as the trade association for one of the world's most vibrant and innovative industries. Founded in 1989 to lobby the U.S. Congress in support of methanol fuel markets, MI now serves its members in every corner of the globe from offices in both Washington, D.C. and Singapore. Each day, roughly 70,000 metric tonnes of methanol is shipped from one continent to another, enough product to fill 777 rail cars. As an essential chemical building block and emerging energy resource, methanol impacts our daily lives in infinite ways. Today, MI's membership includes the world’s leading methanol producers, technology companies, distributors, terminal operators and shippers.

Big news for shipping’s transition to net-zero emissions: the SRC Group Methanol Superstorage Technology has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from leading marine classification society RINA! ?? #Methanol is a leading alternative fuel for shipping, but traditional storage methods take up a lot of space. SRC's innovative solution changes that. By replacing bulky tank designs with a compact, triple-barrier system, it boosts storage capacity by 85%—a breakthrough for shipowners looking to maximize fuel efficiency and range. ? RINA’s approval confirms that this cutting-edge technology meets key safety and classification requirements. It also aligns with the International Maritime Organization’s interim guidelines (MSC.1/Circ.1621) for ships using methanol and ethanol, ensuring compliance as the industry moves toward cleaner fuels. This milestone paves the way for broader adoption of methanol as a marine fuel, offering shipowners a safe, efficient, and scalable storage solution. ?? A recent Seatrade Maritime interview highlights the rising demand for methanol as a marine fuel which complements the role of scaling methanol-to-hydrogen reformer technology to support shipping’s decarbonization goals. ? As the maritime industry accelerates its transition to cleaner fuels, methanol is taking centre stage. According to Gregory Dolan, CEO of the Methanol Institute, over 1,000 vessels in the orderbook could run on methanol in the next five years, with 350 newbuilds, 700 methanol-ready ships, and 100 retrofits expected. Meanwhile, production is scaling rapidly, with China targeting 35 million tons of bio-methanol and e-methanol by 2030. ? Methanol’s scalability, established bunkering infrastructure, and regulatory compliance make it a practical pathway to hydrogen adoption. At e1 Marine, we’re leveraging this momentum by converting methanol into fuel-cell-grade hydrogen on demand, offering ports and vessels a cost-effective, emissions-reducing solution that avoids the storage and distribution challenges of traditional hydrogen. ? E-methanol and biomethanol – can they work together to accelerate decarbonisation? E-methanol, produced from captured CO2 and renewable energy, offers great scalability as these sustainable power sources become more abundant. Biomethanol, produced through anaerobic digestion, excels in regions with strong agricultural sectors and biomass availability. This process produces CO2 alongside biomethanol, creating opportunities for Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU). Both are low-carbon fuels that are chemically indistinguishable, making them equally effective at serving different market needs. As project development accelerates on the back of growing sustainable fuel demand, supportive regulatory frameworks, and decarbonisation initiatives, we should actively pursue synergies that allow us to maximise the strengths of both production pathways. For example, the CO2 generated from the biomethanol process can be captured and utilised as a source for e-methanol production to create efficient circular systems. Embracing different technologies and exploring complementary approaches will allow us to build a more resilient and sustainable fuel ecosystem. This gives us the best chance to meet the growing demand for low-carbon fuels from sectors such as shipping, aviation, and chemical manufacturing while also ensuring energy security. #methanol #emethanol #decarbonization #carboncapture #biomethanol #cleantech

?????? ???????? ???????? ???????????? ?????? ???????? ???????????? ???????????? ???? ?????????? ???????????????? ??????????????????? As one of the world’s busiest ports, Hong Kong has a unique opportunity to lead the way in green methanol bunkering—a fuel that offers immediate emissions reductions and a practical pathway to decarbonization. With its new Action Plan on Green Maritime Fuel Bunkering and tax incentives in the 2025-26 Budget, Hong Kong is laying the groundwork to become a premier hub for methanol-powered vessels. According to Clarksons data, full methanol bunkering is already available at 20 ports worldwide, with another 15 under development. As demand for low-emission fuels accelerates, ports that invest early in methanol infrastructure will gain a competitive edge. Here’s what needs to happen: ?? Scaling up green methanol supply: Reliable sourcing from global and regional producers is critical. ??? Expanding infrastructure: Modern storage and safe bunkering facilities will make or break adoption. ?? Setting global standards: Regulatory clarity will drive investment and confidence in methanol bunkering. If Hong Kong gets this right, it won’t just secure its role as a global shipping powerhouse, it will set the benchmark for green ports worldwide. ?? The race to decarbonize shipping is heating up, and so is the debate about over the best alternative fuels. While ammonia has been hailed as a zero-carbon solution, its extreme toxicity and complex handling requirements are raising serious concerns. Both #methanol and #ammonia offer significant emissions reduction potential, yet industry adoption is telling a clear story. In a recent S&P Global interview, MI member Proman’s sustainability head, Peter Schild, made a compelling case for methanol as the frontrunner in maritime decarbonization. The numbers speak for themselves: ? 360+ methanol-powered vessels are already in operation or on order. ? Methanol can be handled at ambient temperature with minimal modifications to existing infrastructure across 120+ ports. ? Successful trials show methanol's viability as a transition fuel. A recent voyage using a blend of 20% green methanol and 80% conventional methanol achieved a 31% reduction in CO2 equivalent emissions compared to very low sulfur fuel oil, while meeting the IMO's 2025 emissions targets, according to Schild. Ammonia still has an important role to play in the long term, but challenges remain. Its high toxicity and complex handling requirements mean that additional safety measures, infrastructure, and crew training are needed before widespread adoption. Meanwhile, methanol is already being deployed at scale, providing an immediate pathway to lower-carbon shipping. ??????????’?? ???? ???????????? ???????????????? ???? ????????????????’?? ???????????? ????????????????????. The right mix of fuels will evolve over time—but methanol’s head start is undeniable. To fully realize its potential, the industry must prioritize clear carbon accounting frameworks and regulatory certainty. The upcoming International Maritime Organization MEPC83 meeting is expected to address these regulatory frameworks, and the Methanol Institute will be present to make the case for methanol. ?? The upcoming International Maritime Organization's #MEPC83 meeting will be a turning point for global shipping. In less than three weeks, member states and industry will meet in London to decide on important mid-term measures that will help shape the global framework for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in shipping. This is an important opportunity for the industry to align and move towards net-zero emissions by 2050. The industry is watching closely, hoping for clear policies and strong economic incentives to speed up the transition to net-zero. A global carbon levy, stronger market-based measures, and regulatory certainty could provide the momentum needed to drive change. ?? ???????? ???? ?????? ?????????? ???? ?????? ?????????????? ?????????????????? ???? ???????????????????????? ????????????????’?? ???????????????????? ?????????????? ??????-?????????
