?? SJSU MetCS + Pacific Gas and Electric Company = A long-term partnership advancing Fire Weather Research! ?? With wildfires becoming more intense—like the recent Los Angeles wildfires—understanding fire weather is more critical than ever. That’s why MetCS Department Chair Craig Clements and Professor Adam Kochanski have had their $400K grant from PG&E renewed as they continue to advance Fire Weather Modeling Research. This research will enhance fire behavior predictions, helping first responders and communities stay ahead of wildfire threats. Proud to see SJSU MetCS leading the way in wildfire science and public safety! #WildfireResearch #FireWeather #ClimateScience #PublicSafety

Science that Makes a Difference! ??? A new study finds that Green Ninja's project-based science curriculum—co-founded by San José State University MetCS professor Dr. Eugene Cordero — boosts academic success, especially for underserved students! Some of the key findings include: ? +2.5 point increase in standardized test scores ? 13% fewer students performing below standard ? Strongest gains among English learners & economically disadvantaged students Green Ninja engages students through real-world problem-solving, empowering them to take action in their communities. ?Dr. Cordero says, "When students connect science to challenges in their own communities, learning becomes personal." Meet Edgar McGregor: San José State University MetCS Grad & Windstorm Scale Innovator?? Edgar is a 2023 graduate of SJSU’s Meteorology & Climate Science program. He developed a groundbreaking windstorm scale to communicate the strength of Santa Ana winds more effectively. The years he invested gaining the trust of his community allowed this young climate scientist to save thousands of lives during California’s latest wildfires by providing clearer risk assessments to the public.? His recent analysis of wind events, using ensemble prediction models, highlights how his scale helps communities understand wind risk. His insights allowed residents in high-risk areas—like Ventura County, Orange County, and the Inland Empire—to prepare ahead of time.? Edgar’s work is a testament to the power of applied science in action. Join us in celebrating his impact! ??? #SpartanPride #ClimateScience #Meteorology #WildfirePreparedness #SantaAnaWinds?

?? Faculty Spotlight: Elizabeth Walsh?? Congratulations to Dr. Elizabeth (Elly) Walsh on her promotion to full Professor! ?? And if that's not impressive enough, she's also wrapping up her second PhD - this time in Paleoceanography! Dr. Walsh's research weaves across three critical fronts: ??Paleoceanography, ?? Climate Science, and ?? Science Education. Her research is making connections from the distant past to today's climate and continues all the way through to the students who will be our scientists of the future. Wow! Dr. Walsh truly embodies the title of an *Interdisciplinary Scientist*. Dr. Walsh's work has been featured in leading journals like *Nature Climate Change* and funded by the National Science Foundation, among others. She is also passionate about ensuring a more equitable future in science education and beyond. The Department commends Dr. Walsh's dedication to interdisciplinary research, education, and making a difference in our communities! Truly an asset to the department! #FacultySpotlight #ClimateScience #ScienceEducation #DEI #Paleooceanagraphy
