An experience design firm focused on serving schools, museums, hospitals, and corporate clients through architecture, exhibition design, and graphic design. Founded in 2001, the Philadelphia-based practice is composed of a core team of design professionals who believe that intelligently organized buildings and social spaces are effective vehicles for informal education and interpersonal engagement. In 2002, Founder & Principal, Alan Metcalfe asked one of his clients, Aaron Goldblatt (then Deputy Director of the Wagner Free Institute of Science) to join the firm. Aaron's focus on creating spaces that help people learn and Alan’s passion for designing buildings from the inside—combining physical, visual, and experiential elements to make engaging social spaces—formed the foundation of the practice that puts people at the center of design. Our holistic knowledge of design and people informs all of our work. With architecture and exhibition design being central to the practice, we utilize our diverse and collective design experiences to create compelling spaces that make visitors feel welcome, safe, and happy. We approach every project with an eye toward the stories it can tell.

“Study the past, if you would divine the future.”—Confucius How does a Native and early European trading settlement become a premier urban financial center in the New South? Why is Charlotte nicknamed “The Queen City”? What lies in store for a city with a past lined with stories of inequality and resistance? ? These are the thought-provoking questions our team helped the Levine Museum of the New South pose through the design of their exhibit, "Charlotte: Moving Forward, Looking Back". Combining stories of people, places, and events in a foundational narrative of Charlotte’s history, the exhibition allows visitors to experience the city’s past and explore its potential future through the museum’s collections, interactive media displays, and art by local creatives. ? Good times at Sunday's photoshoot at Free Library of Philadelphia's Frankford branch! Having worked in book publishing for the 10 years before I started at Metcalfe Architecture & Design, LLC, organizing a photoshoot at a library was really special. While we were there, at least 6 people from the neighborhood stopped by to ask when they were reopening, which I think really speaks to the importance of libraries in our communities. The space was also a huge hit with the kids, who found lots of creative ways to use the cushions in the children's reading area-- and found some books to read along the way! Shout out to Rich Gallagher, AIA and Lydia Lincke from the design team and Maddie Nice for the assistance. I'll be at the NEMA conference this week and hope to see many of you there. I'll be doing a speed-round presentation at the Exhibit PAG Show & Tell on Wednesday at 2:00pm about the Nature Education Center exhibit I worked on with Metcalfe Architecture & Design, LLC at Baltimore's Cylburn Arboretum. I'll be talking about our interpretive approach of Defamiliarizing the Familiar. I'm also bringing a LOT of Halloween candy for stress snacking, so come find me if you need some extra sugar. DVFriends' new Café Courtyard has been officially open for a few weeks to students, families, and staffulty. It has been remarkable to see how our community fills this space with laughter during events, lunch, and community time. Students and faculty have fully embraced the courtyard, enjoying meals outside on our patio tables, especially on sunny days. As Constitution Day approaches on September 17, we want to spotlight an exceptional B&F project completed last year! The National Constitution Center’s (NCC) newest gallery showcases the five freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment: religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. Spanning 1,500 square feet, the gallery features an array of captivating visual and audio media, interactives, and artifacts designed to educate visitors.
