?? In what is perhaps the first time ever that the Publish, Review, Curate model was applied to a blog post (correct, Martin Fenner?), today we publish Christopher Steven Marcum's blog post "Drinking from the Firehose? Write More and Publish Less", which was previously published on Upstream. Academia is undergoing a rapid transformation characterized by exponential growth of scholarly outputs. This phenomenon, often termed the "firehose problem," presents significant challenges for researchers, publishers, funders, policymakers, and institutions alike. Marcum addresses these in his blog post. ?? Find the full post, the editorial assessment and all peer reviews on MetaROR by clicking the link below!

A new platform designed to transform how we review and share metaresearch through a publish-review-curate model
关于我们
MetaROR (MetaResearch Open Review) is a new open platform designed to transform how we review and share metaresearch through a publish-review-curate model. Developed by the Research on Research Institute (RoRI) and the Association for Interdisciplinary Meta-Research and Open Science (AIMOS), MetaROR’s model aims to accelerate the communication of scholarly work. Peer review takes place after publication rather than before and is organised openly, therefore enabling reviews to be reused and reducing the pressure on the peer review system.

It's great to see eLife making strides in improving the publish-review-curate model!
?? It’s been two years since we launched the eLife Model for publishing, here's how it's going. ?? https://lnkd.in/ebennVFC In 2023, we announced our current model for publishing that places the focus on nuanced public assessments instead of publishing outcomes. We now publish every manuscript sent for review alongside public reviews and a short assessment summary explaining its strengths and weaknesses. Authors also get control over how and when they revise before they convert their paper to a Version of Record (VOR) for indexing. Since then, we’ve seen the appetite researchers have for a faster and fairer way to publish. We’ve also faced some challenges because our Publish, Review, Curate (PRC) publishing model doesn’t fit neatly into existing publishing infrastructure. Our latest blog explores some key milestones and accomplishments of the first two years of a new era for research publishing. Here are some highlights: ?? As of January 31, we have published 1,601 VORs. Over 96% of these were published after at least one round of revisions. ?? The eLife Model makes research available faster. Authors can expect their first version to be published in around 3 months from submission. ?? Authors are still choosing to act on reviewers' comments to improve their work. Of the 96% that revise, ~40% improved the strength of their evidence. What's more, 76.5% of papers originally assessed as 'incomplete' improved their evidence to ‘solid’ or better. Read the full breakdown in our blog where you can also find author testimonies, example ‘landmark’ and ‘exceptional’ papers, information on PRC models, and plenty more: https://lnkd.in/ebennVFC

Moumita Koley, PhD interviewed MetaROR managing editor André Brasil for Katina Magazine on rethinking how we review, curatie, and communicate research - and the role MetaROR can play.
In the latest Open Knowledge article, “Rethinking How Research is Reviewed, Curated, and Communicated,” Moumita Koley, PhD interviews André Brasil, a researcher closely involved in MetaROR. MetaROR is a platform designed to reimagine how metaresearch—the study of research itself—is evaluated and shared. During the Q&A, André shares: ?? The challenges of traditional peer review ?? How MetaROR is reshaping research curation and communication ?? The role of transparency and collaboration in improving scholarly publishing ?? MetaROR is excited to see Center for Open Science take a big step forward in supporting transparent, community-driven research with the launch of DOI Versioning for Preprints on the OSF ?? Why does this matter? DOI Versioning ensures that every update to a preprint gets its own timestamped DOI, preserving the full history of a research project. By enabling transparent version histories, DOI Versioning supports emerging publishing models like MetaROR’s?Publish, Review, Curate, which separate the traditional publishing process into distinct phases. This empowers researchers to confidently share their work, integrate feedback, and publish in innovative venues like overlay journals. Exciting news: MetaROR is partnering with the STI-ENID 2025 Conference in Bristol! This collaboration will transform the conference experience of participants and set a new standard for transparency and collaboration in scholarly engagement. MetaROR operates on a publish-review-curate model. This means contributions to the conference – posters, papers and papers-in-progress – will be openly shared with reviews transparently published alongside them and that, as a contributor to STI-ENID 2025, you’ll have the unique opportunity to submit an enriched version of your conference presentation to MetaROR. Kathryn Zeiler, editor-in-chief at MetaROR and professor of law at Boston University, spoke to The College Fix about how MetaROR brings transparency to the peer review process and alleviates pressures of the publish-or-perish culture. With MetaROR, researchers get to decide for themselves how much to write and publish, without “pressure to sacrifice quality to improve quantity in an effort to increase publisher profits.” Read the full piece here: https://lnkd.in/eFynGfK5

Innovation and experimentation are key to advancing scholarly communication, and bibliographic databases must support, not hinder, this progress.
?? Innovation and experimentation are essential to improve scholarly communication practices. Bibliographic databases should support and facilitate this, argue RoRI's Ludo Waltman and the co-authors of a blog post proposing four criteria for checking that Bibliographic Databases support rather than hinder innovation and experimentation in scholarly communication. I had the pleasure of reading an earlier draft of Adam's book on the Publish-Review-Curate model, the model used by the MetaROR (MetaResearch Open Review) platform set up by the Research On Research Institute (RoRI) and AIMOS. For anyone interested in the future of scholarly publishing, I strongly recommend reading this thoughtful book and providing feedback to Adam!
?? Excited to announce the release of PRC vs The Cathedral! ?? This new book explores how the Publish-Review-Curate (PRC) model is reshaping academic publishing—challenging traditional power structures and fostering a more inclusive, community-driven ecosystem. ?? Version 1 is now available in PDF (below)—future updates (EPUB, web, and print) will build on your feedback. If these ideas resonate, I’d love for you to share this with your networks and start a conversation about the future of scholarly communication. #publishing #opensource #openaccess #journals #innovation

I agree with Jeffrey Brainard that pre-prints need better public awareness and the small detail in his Science Magazine article is worth amplifying more: preprints are increasingly peer-reviewed since their proliferation during the covid-19 pandemic. Peer-review is no longer the exclusive domain of journals, another indicator of their declining value proposition. Services such as PREreview (of which I'm on the board) and MetaROR (MetaResearch Open Review) exist to fill the gap in review outside of the confines of the inequitable traditional publication process. One area of improvement that we need in this space is better metadata and badging to associate and communicate the extent of review of preprints.
