We are delighted to have been part of a landmark judgment that upholds the rights of artists and provides much-needed relief to the media and entertainment industry in India. The Delhi High Court, in this significant ruling, emphasized that vulgarity is not confined to any specific area. The DHC further stated that such petitions should not be entertained as judicial time cannot be wasted for personal grievances. In rejecting the PIL seeking modifications to renowned rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh’s song Maniac, the Court held that specific allegations against an individual do not justify public interest litigation. The Chief Justice firmly opposed the notion of “Bhojpuri vulgarity”, stressing that artistic expression should not be evaluated through a regional lens. This decision marks an important step in protecting creative freedom and setting clear boundaries on censorship. We are proud of Ishaan Mukherjee and Sahasradeep Sharma for their stellar work on this matter, setting a strong precedent for an artist's rights.
