This is a great opportunity for smart and motivated kids!
AgTech Ecosystem - the 2025 Farm Robotics Challenge application deadline is this Friday, January 17th. You still have time to get your University team together (can be a mix of undergrads and grad students). Last year's competition was great with students from all over the country competing for the top prize. Big props to Farm-ng (Nathan Dorn) and UC ANR (Gabriel Youtsey) for getting the event launched and growing! In 2024 the FRC winners were part of the Awards ceremony at FIRA USA. The Farm-NG Amigas are a great baseline platforms that all the teams can use to get a head start on their dev efforts - doesn't hurt to start with an autonomous mobility solution ready for accessories and software solutions. In 2025 Western Growers is becoming a sponsor and adding $10,000 to the Reward prize. This event completely aligns with the objectives of WG members: (1) early stage R&D work towards commercial robots at the University level; (2) preparing more students for STEM and AgTech careers. For 2025 we want to try and push things forward in a couple of key areas: 1) Competitive analysis - we will be looking for teams to do some analysis of companies and products already or about to be in the market so they can make sure their product will find an open spot in the market if they choose to move towards commercialization and building a company. 2) Business case - we will be looking for teams to do some analysis of the potential business case to make sure their robotic solution can be delivered at prices that work for the grower of the crop they're working in. A fully loaded business model is not required but some thoughts on pricing ranges, pricing models, and go-to market strategy will go a long way with the judges in picking the winner. The reality is that with robotics platforms like Farm-NG's Amiga making development of AgTech easier and quicker, the next challenge will be in these two areas - dialing in competitive positioning and business case details. In 2025 you can almost assume that any robotic solution will have competitors, but you may have to look for them and the judges will expect that. Looking forward to working with this year's competitors - applications close Friday so get moving if you don't already have your team picked and starting to move forward on ideas! SFTW: Is Plenty (vertical farming) the Juicero of Agriculture? This mid-week post is sponsored by Farmers Edge (Jinjer Lorenz) I explore the latest massive down-round news about Plenty?, the vertical farming company. Vertical farming has been prominent in dystopian tales like the Silo series by Hugh Howey and the futurist Mars colonization by humans trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson. Vertical farming has struggled mightily on planet earth! -Does Plenty try to solve problems which don't exist? (The Juicero reference) -Is vertical farming about access, affordability, quality, efficient resource utilization, product differentiation, or something else? -Are we missing first principles thinking when it comes to vertical farming? What are its implications? Finally, I provide a simple decision tree to decide whether one should try and invest in vertical farming or not. This post was inspired by Rob Trice's post, and subsequent discussion by Walt Duflock, Adam Bergman, and a post on what startups should look for by Cassidy Johnston AgTech Alchemy Sachi Desai Link in first comment

Happy New Year from the AgTech Alchemy Team (Walt Duflock, Sachi Desai, Rhishi P.)!! We're sending warm wishes to our amazing community as we ring in 2025! ? We want to share several milestones from 2024 and several planned for 2025. ? Things we are proud of achieving in 2024: ?????? Establishing AgTech Alchemy – with our firsts event in Redwood City in September. After years of discussing such a concept, we finally did it. Building Community Infrastructure – a regular series of events (four), establishing an active Slack community and a Linkedin Channel to share community accomplishments, bring awareness to industry leaders, and original thought leadership. Catalyzing a Passionate Community – since the initial event, we have had tremendous engagement, outreach to bring the events to locations beyond the Bay, and how people can lean in. It doesn’t need to wait for a conference and doesn’t need to be limited to VCs. ? Things we are planning for 2025: ???? #QuarterlyDigitalMagazine - featuring leading voices, thinking and ideas in AgTech, Food, and Pure Play Technology. AgTech Alchemy @#WAT2025 – a special event the evening before World Agritech SF (March 10th) with speakers, mingling, and a dedicated private venue for the community to connect #EventsOutsideofCalifornia – The first AgTech Alchemy event outside of the Bay Area, we are still trying to define what this exactly is, but we have interest and engagement that beyond the Bay is a must. ? We will do more than what’s shared but are still planning. Regardless, the goal remains the same. Bring our passionate community of thinkers, doers and investors together to create genuine relationships and level up our industry to create impact. ? Thank you for your continued support! We can't wait to see what the new year brings. Happy New Year! ?? ? Now your turn, share with us what you’d like to see the AgTech Alchemy Community do in the New Year in the comments. #AgTechAlchemy #AgTechCommunity #AgTechBayArea #AgrifoodTech #AgTech #innovation #community #connections #thoughtleadership #worldagritech #quarterly David Nothmann Adam Stager Rohita Kotagiri Steve Mantle Ariel Patton Pratik Desai, PhD Lawrence Ibarria Shane Thomas Adam Bergman Robert Sisson Robert Grey Michael Ott Chris Parker Carl Lippert Gilbert Guerrero Erica Bliss Sumer S. Very good podcast and outlook from the opinionated and always prepared Walt Duflock!
AgTech Ecosystem - had a great time chatting ag and AgTech with Tim Nuss and Tyler Nuss on The Modern Acre podcast about a wide range of topics: 1) Good riddance Lina Kahn - the current head of the FTC will be the former head soon enough. No one has done more to quelch M&A (all sectors, not just AgTech) with a misguided antitrust policy approach. Nothing would help AgTech (and all tech) more than the return of a more sensible M&A policy where companies have more certainty around how their M&A deals will be evaluated. 2) Labor remains specialty crop CA agriculture's biggest challenge - $16.3B for 850M hours per year makes that clear and the underlying causes (regulatory cost increases documented in Lynn Hamilton's research at Cal Poly College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences and increasing use of H-2A labor pushing more ag labor towards $30/hour with transportation, housing, and food costs included). 3) Automation is making some progress in segments like weeding (Carbon Robotics, Stout Industrial Technology, Inc., FarmWise), spraying (GUSS Automation, Ecorobotix), harvest assist (Burro), and DIY platforms (Farm-ng), but not with the 800-pound gorilla that uses up 2/3 of those farm worker hours - harvest of fresh products that show up as whole products in stores and restaurants. 4) Capital is the fuel that helps startups grow and both venture capital (Silicon Valley - all segments) and AgriFoodTech VC took a big drop from 2021 to 2023 - 85% drop in IPOs, 50% drop in VC, and 70% drop in AgriFoodTech VC (thanks mainly to CEA and alt-protein), which will make that capital harder to secure going forward. 5) If CA growers can't automate their way out of the labor problem, the acreage is starting to relocate. CA is forecast to lose 32% of acres (9M) and 51% of farmers (45k) from 1997 to 2052). If you look at ag exports in key regions, the US (175%), LatAm (100%), and CA (141%) all experienced good growth the last 20 years but Peru went to the front of the class with a 2,180% growth in ag exports. 6) Much of the growth in Peru has been caused by policy decisions: (1) $3.6B deep water port above Lima with China as part of Belt and Road just opened in November and is state of the art with automation; (2) private and public investment in water storage and infrastructure; (3) Economic Development funding for things like the Avocados in Peru 40x40 booth at IFPA in front of 20,000+ attendees. California is still in a leadership position in specialty crops, but the margin of error caused by decades of policies hostile to ag is getting thinner and places like Peru are taking advantage of the opportunity. Software is Feeding the World Farmers Edge is the sponsor for December 2024 I am excited to bring another edition of "SFTW Convos" with Léo Carvalho of Solinftec Solinftec is reimagining the future of agriculture with their "technology which lives in the field" Solix robots. They are completely rethinking the paradigm of farming operations in commodity row crops which has been dominated by ever larger and larger machines, and broadcast use of chemicals With food security and climate change, we need to rethink how we do farming and Solinftec is providing an alternate vision (which time will tell if it is applicable or not) Britaldo Hernandez, CEO of Solinftec also recently posted about it and this approach also came up in my convo with Feroz from Syngenta The conversation also touched on -Customer centricity -How to think about your products when you go from one market to another (for example, Brazil to the US) -Incentive alignments within the ecosystem -How robots like Solix can completely transform an agriculture retailers business model from selling products to selling services -Gazing into the future and a lot more The image below reimagines a farm with a swarm of autonomous & electric robots which live in the field, and are managed remotely (or from a control tower) Upgrade to the paid version (15% discount still applicable for annual plans) to read the whole conversation.
