Our final guiding principle in this series reminds us to “Manage the Risks”. Frequently reviewing potential risks to a project can reduce negative impacts before they become issues. We recommend reviewing and managing potential risks in the RAID log at least once per week, or more frequently as the project may require.

This principle focuses on sharing insightful tips, repeatable processes, and knowledge about essential tools that can assist in guiding the client toward success. Developing client strengths in new ways will improve their overall project execution and delivery for years to come.

The “decide and move on” guiding principle reminds us that important decisions must be made in a timely manner, documenting and acting quickly on those decisions in order to sustain project momentum toward success. Project managers assist in guiding those conversations by ensuring that all relevant details are ready and available throughout the decision-making process.

The 3rd guiding principle is "Involve Me". A large project is likely to touch multiple departments within an organization. Different stakeholder groups will be affected at different times and some will have different communication needs. Leaders own the responsibility of amplifying the message across their department and with peers throughout the organization. Keeping everyone informed and engaged appropriately is a significant task, though one that must be prioritized accordingly.

When good processes become repeatable the project team can build and utilize templates, making some work easier by using them over and over throughout the different phases of any project. Reuse templates wherever possible, making minor adjustments as necessary or required.

Our first guiding principle to spotlight is the “Aha! moment”. There will be many Aha! moments throughout the course of any project. This guiding principle reminds us to remain open-minded and adaptable throughout all phases of a project, anticipating the unexpected and being prepared to respond.

Establishing guiding principles at the beginning of a project is so important for making decisions later down the line. In the following weeks, we are going to be spotlighting some of our favorite guiding principles that have helped us on some difficult projects.
