We are excited to announce a new collaboration between Mayo Clinic and Baszucki Group for a pilot trial looking at the mental and metabolic impact of a ketogenic diet for bipolar disorder. Read the press release here: https://lnkd.in/eW4Kc3nZ How fitting is it that the term “ketogenic diet” was first coined at the Mayo Clinic in 1921 by Dr. Russell Wilder, and now, over a hundred years later, ketogenic therapy returns to Mayo to further explore its impact on mental health? As Dr. Kirk Nylen highlights in this clip, too often, studies get funded, results get published…and nothing changes. The impact remains confined to journals instead of reaching the patients who need it most. Mayo Clinic’s new pilot study is looking to change all of that. By integrating key hospital departments like cardiology, psychiatry, and nutrition teams this trial aims to inform the creation of an interdisciplinary precision nutrition clinical service that could pave the way for ketogenic therapy to impact the lives of even more people across the world. This approach challenges the traditional research model and asks an important question: Should every study include a plan for real-world impact? We are excited to announce a new collaboration between Baszucki Group and Mayo Clinic to investigate the metabolic and mental impact of ketogenic therapy for bipolar disorder! This groundbreaking study aims to inform the creation of a precision nutrition clinical service at Mayo Clinic and map out how hospitals can implement this intervention to help more people who need it the most. ??Read the full announcement: https://lnkd.in/eW4Kc3nZ
Baszucki Group is proud to announce a $3.3 million gift to Mayo Clinic to support a clinical trial investigating ketogenic therapy for bipolar disorder. This important study will further explore the intersection of metabolic and mental health along with cardio-metabolic implications, with the goal of informing the development of an interdisciplinary precision nutrition clinical service. “By exploring the profound connections between metabolic and mental health, this initiative not only holds the potential to revolutionize care for bipolar disorder, but also lays the groundwork for broader applications of therapeutic nutrition in psychiatry,” said Jan Ellison Baszucki, co-founder and President of Baszucki Group. For years, saturated fat—including coconut oil—has been thought to raise LDL and heart disease risk. A new comprehensive analysis by Mary Newport MD challenges this narrative. ?? Study Breakdown: ? Reviewed 26 studies & 984 lipid profiles ? Total Cholesterol & LDL response varied ? HDL cholesterol increased & triglycerides decreased (Improved Triglyceride:HDL ratio) This study reveals that the traditional narrative about saturated fat and heart disease risk isn’t so straightforward. The science tells a more complex story. ?? Watch the full video with Dr. Bret Scher: https://lnkd.in/gvqPcvxx #CoconutOil #CardiovascularHealth #SaturatedFat #MetabolicHealth #NutritionResearch

The primary findings of the first European pilot study exploring ketogenic therapy for bipolar disorder have been published! Led by Drs. Iain Campbell, Daniel Smith, and Harry Campbell, this new study offers hope for a therapeutic ketogenic dietary intervention as a new treatment option for bipolar disorder. Key Findings: ? Ketosis Adherence: All of the participants who completed this trial were able to achieve ketosis. In fact, 91% of ketone readings throughout the duration of the study were positive for ketosis. ? Quality of Life Improvements: Ketones were correlated with improved mood, energy levels, speed of thought, impulsivity, and anxiety. ? Improved Metabolic Health: Subjects lost weight, reduced blood pressure, and improved metabolic biomarkers. ? Symptom Stability: Participants remained free of bipolar cycling for the duration of the study. ? Brain Imaging: The study is the first to use neuroimaging to demonstrate that a ketogenic diet may improve brain metabolism in individuals with a bipolar disorder diagnosis. The imaging revealed reductions in excitatory neurotransmitters typically elevated in bipolar disorder, suggesting a potential mechanism behind a ketogenic diet's effectiveness These results were supported by participant experiences leading to powerful quotes like, “For the first time in years, I felt like my brain was finally running on the right fuel.” This study is an important step toward identifying new treatments for those living with bipolar disorder. By advancing our understanding of ketogenic therapy, we hope this research inspires larger trials that could bring meaningful relief and renewed hope to individuals and families impacted by serious mental illness. Can blood test be used to personalize treatment for individuals living mental illness? In this week’s interview, Dr. Niculescu from the University of Arizona discusses how testing for specific biomarkers can allow practitioners to better understand the current state of their patient’s mental health and tailor treatments with precision for better outcomes. In this interview, Dr. Niculescu covers: - Why psychiatry is still practiced like 19th-century medicine and how to modernize it - How blood tests can pinpoint the right treatment for a patient including lifestyle interventions, medication choice, and dosing - How blood tests can identify the nuanced difference between mental illnesses like depression and bipolar disorder at a biological level - Why these tests could be more reliable than genetic testing - How early screening could help prevent serious mental illness - The future of personalized lifestyle recommendations for mental health Enhancing psychiatric treatment requires a personalized approach that recognizes each patient’s unique needs. The technology discussed in this interview holds the potential to significantly enhance the effectiveness of both medications and lifestyle interventions, leading to meaningful improvements in a patient’s quality of life and overall health outcomes. ??
