What are the benefits of making your home more energy efficient? ?? Professor Jonathan Gregory, of the Met Office and University of Reading, retrofitted his Victorian home to cut its carbon dioxide emissions to zero. As part of our March climate theme of the co-benefits of climate actions (so-called 'win-wins), Jonathan has explained why he made changes and the difference it has made. Windstorms are the leading cause of major power outages in the UK. This is primarily due to windthrow - the uprooting or breakage of trees by strong winds - which then fall on overhead power lines. Traditional risk assessments in the UK have focused solely on wind speed, overlooking critical factors that influence windthrow such as antecedent rainfall, wind direction, and seasonal elements like leaf cover. In a new study published today, a team including our scientists found neglecting these additional factors can lead to a significant underestimation - by 2 to 5 times - of the likelihood of large power outages during windstorms. Colin Manning, research associate at Newcastle University and visiting scientist at the Met Office, and report author said: "Windstorms have long been recognised as a threat to the UK's electricity distribution networks, which are vital components of the nation's critical infrastructure. Failures in these networks can cascade through other systems, affecting essential services.? “By taking the multiple weather conditions into consideration, we can significantly improve the accuracy of power outage predictions and can better prepare for the impacts of extreme weather events."? The?Met Office Pollen Forecast 2025 is now LIVE. ? Spring has arrived, and so has our five-day pollen forecast. Our enhanced forecasting methodology now allows for more detailed information on multiple pollen species simultaneously across different UK regions. ? The tree pollen season has already begun, and we expect to see particularly high birch pollen levels this year due to last season's weather conditions. For grass pollen, which is the most common reason for hay fever reactions, it’s too early to clearly define how the season ahead could look, with much depending on the weather over the next few weeks. Stay informed by visiting our website or downloading the Met Office app for alerts sent directly to your phone. Find out more in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/eERqw9hw ? #PollenForecast
