With Ethereum’s Devcon fast approaching, here’s a question I’ve been pondering lately: should Solidity be dethroned? At first glance it’s hard to see what’s not to love about Solidity: > It’s accessible: both easy to learn (especially if you know JavaScript) and master (most devs say it takes ~6 months) > It’s popular: there’s already a huge selection of templates available for builders to hit the ground running > It’s developer-friendly: tools like Hardhat and Truffle simplify debugging / deploying In short it’s the gold standard for Ethereum. And yet…it’s not the best we can do. That’s actually a feature, not a bug: the programming language needed to take smart contracts from 0 to 1 a decade ago was never going to be the most sophisticated and secure–it simply needed to be fit for purpose. But it’s not 2015 anymore, so we need to be thinking ahead. I see two viable paths forward: 1) Devs slowly transition to a more difficult but functionally robust language like Rust 2) Solidity itself should level up much like JavaScript did through major updates and frameworks The least desirable approach would be to sit back and hope for the best. As a community I think we should help steer how our web3 programming languages evolve. Thoughts? #solidity #ethereum #smartcontracts

Is code protected speech? It’s an issue that keeps cropping up. I still remember in the 90s when Holywood fought hard against DeCSS code that could decrypt DVDs. Now as decentralized tech advances, the code-as-speech debate is arising more and more in our corner of the tech world. Most recently, a judge dismissed developer Roman Storm’s claim that the charges against him and Tornado Cash (the Ethereum mixer) infringe upon his right to free speech. There are two extremes in this debate. People either believe: - Code is speech, so just like other forms of speech it should be protected *even if* it’s used for questionable purposes. - Code has functions beyond speech, and therefore it should be (as one judge put it) “regulated like other actions that are not purely expressive”. While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, the only way we can make sense of these thorny issues is to understand the tech. As some technologists have warned about AI, one of the greatest risks is that people conclude too early that they understand it. This goes for any hot-button tech issue: autonomous vehicles, VR, biometrics, blockchain–knowledge of the underlying tech goes a long way towards resolving needless controversy. To me it’s yet another reason why we need to emphasize education. We need to be educating not just to attract users, but to help chart a clear course for how our space evolves. #FreeSpeech #Decentralization #Web3
