There has been a good a bit of discussion in traditional and social media on whether the US grid is “out of power” because of #AI #datacenters. Thankfully, the Duke University study took a new and productive angle and highlighted an opportunity to unlock 100 GW+ of capacity through large load flexibility. Sean James continued the discussion with a fantastic post. I am excited to see this new direction and thought I would add some thoughts in the attached article on how data centers can become grid assets by providing long duration flexibility enabled by #naturalgas backup generation. In this article I will argue that we should meet AI demand growth with the new, ultra-low carbon, reliable baseload made up of solar, wind, batteries and long-duration #datacenterflexibility. ? In addition to Sean, I would like to commend others that are pushing this discussion forward at this critical time including Brian Janous, Aaron M., KC Mares. Also, I would like to thank the authors of the report Tyler Norris, Tim Profeta, Dalia Pati?o-Echeverri and Adam Cowie-Haskell.

The past week has been a big one for the U.S. water power industry, with multiple legislative efforts gaining momentum. ? To help you stay informed, we’ve broken down the most pressing water power bills currently in play: ??Maintaining and Enhancing Hydroelectricity and River Restoration Act – This bipartisan bill provides a 30% investment tax credit for hydro investments through 2031. It also allows public power utilities to access the credit via elective pay. Without this support, many existing hydro facilities could shut down, threatening grid reliability. Introduced by Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE) and Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-WA), with four additional co-sponsors. ?? FERC Extension Bill – This bill mandates FERC to grant six-year extensions for hydropower projects licensed before 2020. Introduced in the Senate by Sen. Kennedy (R-LA) and Sen. Daines (R-MT), and in the House by Rep. Newhouse (R-WA), with bipartisan backing. ?? Defending Our Dams Act – Introduced by Rep. Newhouse (R-WA), this bill protects the Lower Snake River dams while ensuring safeguards for ratepayers and the Pacific Northwest in the event of a breaching. ?? Protecting Our Water Energy Resource (POWER) Act – Also led by Rep. Newhouse, this legislation prevents the Department of the Interior and USACE from retiring hydro generation if it would raise electricity rates or reduce regional energy reliability by more than 5%. ?? Endangered Species Act Reform Bill – Sponsored by Rep. Westerman (R-AR), this bill prioritizes conservation efforts, incentivizes wildlife conservation on private lands, and enhances recovery incentives for listed species. Introducing Business Strategy Co-Chair, Jared Driggers! Jared Driggers’ career began in the oil and gas industry 18 years ago in electrical BIM design. In 2010, he started working at Duke Energy developing workflows, processes, and training material for substation P&C design. He used his passion for guiding others using the BIM platform to improve his leadership and teaching skills. Jared worked on the SDS/BIM and AutoCAD Electrical initiative for standardizing substation design and presenting these techniques at multiple conferences.? He is a founding member of the Substation Design Solution Industry Consortium (SCSIC) and has served as the Consortium’s P&C chairperson from 2017 until joining POWER Engineers in 2019. At POWER, Jared is an Area Lead, Sr. Project Lead, and BIM Electrical SME for the Power Delivery Substation BIM Department.? In this role, he partners with clients and internal departments to mentor them in their BIM journey. Jared lives in Lancaster, South Carolina with his wife and three sons. He enjoys riding his motorcycle and ATVs, golfing, and camping with his family. “I have been involved from the beginning, and it is awesome to see it start with about 20 folks in a room talking about the future of Substation Design to the 5000+ group of collaborative Utilities, Firms, and Vendors it is today. I never would have thought it would get this much traction in my career. Great to see and still in AWE. #SDSIC2025 #SDSIC #substation
