Water systems shape entire communities. They fuel industries, sustain ecosystems, and bring clean water to homes every day. But behind every flowing tap is an infrastructure network that needs to withstand fires, floods, cyber threats, and the wear of time itself. That’s why risk and resilience planning isn’t optional—it’s essential. At Merrick, we work alongside utilities to conduct these assessments, using the American Water Works Association (AWWA) J100 methodology to quantify risk in real terms. #WeAreMerrick?

We’re always looking for ways to enhance our services by knowledge-sharing within our internal teams and adopting the latest technology to improve and deliver more precise, high-quality results to our clients. Recently, our geomatics team led training for the NavVis VLX wearable mapping device, which offers high-detail reality data capture for complex sites. Teams across all six of our business units are now equipped with the knowledge of how to operate this cutting-edge mobile lidar technology, bringing innovative, data-driven solutions to our projects across the globe. #wearemerrick This training equips our teams with: ? Greater Efficiency – Faster data collection means quicker project turnarounds. ? Higher Accuracy – Advanced scanning technology provides precise geospatial data for better decision-making. ? Seamless Collaboration – Cross-business unit training ensures a unified approach to solving complex challenges.

In many ways, a “sustainable containment lab” is an oxymoron. These facilities are built for biosafety first, which typically means high energy use and resource-heavy safety systems. But even they aren’t exempt from our push toward efficiency and sustainability. Smarter design choices can reduce energy loads, minimize waste, and build more responsible research spaces. So, what does that actually look like? Swipe through to see how we incorporate sustainability into high containment lab design.?#wearemerrick

We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to help reshape the South Platte River at Reynolds Landing Park in Littleton, Colorado—and now, construction has begun! Years of erosion have worn away the river’s banks, disrupted habitat, and made recreation hazardous. And now, this stretch is finally being restored. Merrick’s design will improve fish passage, reduce hazards, and introduce in-water features for safer recreation. On land, realigned trails will give cyclists a dedicated route and bring walkers and runners closer to the water. And reinforcing the river’s natural connection to the land, native wetland vegetation will be planted to stabilize the banks and support wildlife. Restoring rivers like this keeps waterways healthy, landscapes resilient, and people connected to the places they move through.?#wearemerrick

Design, commissioning, and scientific expertise each shape life sciences work—but they’re not always under one roof. At Merrick though? They are. Our science & technology, design, and commissioning teams collaborate to bring?real-world experience and functionality to complex scientific spaces. From designing research labs, to verifying airflow in high-containment facilities, to mapping out validation plans for biomanufacturing, we understand how every piece fits together. That means fewer gaps, fewer delays, and spaces that function exactly as they should, from concept to operation. #wearemerrick

What exactly does commissioning mean for the life sciences team at Merrick? In simple terms, it’s making sure every system in a research facility works exactly as it should—safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with regulatory standards. Merrick has commissioned high-containment labs and specialized research facilities since 2008. We work hands-on to verify airflow systems, containment protocols, decontamination processes, and equipment performance, ensuring that everything functions as an integrated whole. We’ve supported projects like NBAF, Public Health Ontario, SEPRL, and USAMRIID, helping contractors and research teams meet the strictest biosafety and security standards. Whether it’s validating a new BSL-3 lab or guiding a facility through virtual licensing, we bring the expertise to get it done right every time. #wearemerrick
