Say hello to Jacob Frisch, PLS, RPLS, CFedS! Now managing our survey operations team in Loveland, CO, Jacob has been a valued presence at Merrick for 25 years. His team works closely with local communities on boundary determination, mapping, and civil engineering projects—helping shape everything from water systems to subdivisions. Jacob relishes the puzzle-like nature of surveying: every project is a chance to explore the land’s history, piece together intricate details, and solve complex challenges. He thrives on that mix of tradition and evolving technology, where no two days are ever the same. #wearemerrick

Tulsa, OK - are you ready to catch a wave? The new Tulsa Wave Park is now open for business, with seven play zones and two access points (from Zink Lake itself and from the east bank trail system). We designed a 1,100-foot whitewater course for flows up to 800 cfs for tubing, river surfing, and kayaking. Our design includes various play zones that vary in intensity and skill level, meaning there’s something for everyone! #Meetusattheriver and see for yourself! #wearemerrick #mclaughlinwhitewater

You might remember Ramon Renderos Soto from our recent post on space architecture. Ramon is an architect with our life sciences team and has recently celebrated 10 years as an employee owner at Merrick! In his work with our life sciences team, he designs facilities for human, plant, and animal health research. He’s also passionate about sustainable design, with plans to pursue LEED and WELL certifications. He describes architecture as his north star, guiding his career decisions and ultimately leading to his decision to pursue his master’s in architecture from Carleton University. When it came time to choose his thesis topic, he was drawn to space after realizing that space stations are very similar to laboratories, and he could connect his decade of experience in lab design with his passion for space exploration. His personal experience as a cancer survivor and learning about the possibilities of cancer research aboard space stations gave his work a deeper purpose, leading to his thesis focused on a cancer and Earth science research space station in low Earth orbit (LEO). #wearemerrick To learn more about our aerospace work, reach out to David Luke, PE, LEED AP or Jessenia Jimenez.

???Adaptive Management in Action!??? Yesterday, we introduced you to the Happy Canyon Creek restoration project. We developed an adaptive management monitoring plan for this project and adaptive management drawings to help the Mile High Flood District (MHFD) and the City of Lone Tree, CO (CoLT) identify and address potential future erosion issues along the creek. The cross-section photo below shows the limit of excavation that would have been required using traditional practices to establish a stable slope along the stream. Using adaptive management principles, we eliminated this excavation need, protecting the slopes with a vegetated soil lift. This helped us preserve the natural character of the area and promote stability. Throughout the project, we identified the anticipated maximum limits of disturbance to flatten slopes along the creek and implemented permanent improvements, like trails, beyond those limits.?Adaptive management helps us continuously monitor and adjust our strategies on a project to ensure optimal outcomes and sustainability in every project. The dynamic process allows us to respond effectively to changing conditions and stakeholder needs, enhancing our ability to lead in innovative and resilient project management. #wearemerrick

???Project Spotlight: Happy Canyon Creek Restoration??? The southern suburbs of Denver, CO around Happy Canyon Creek are experiencing rapid development, leading to increased stream corridor changes. To tackle this challenge, we partnered with the Mile High Flood District (MHFD), the City of Lone Tree, CO (CoLT), Rampart Range Metro District, and Coventry Development Corp. The goals of the project included: ??Stabilizing stream bed and channel bank areas ??Reconnecting the creek to its floodplain to reduce erosive shear stresses ??Reducing the potential for future erosion from increased urban runoff ??Reducing flow rates to below pre-development conditions for downstream flood protection Our team implemented custom grading along the drainageway, which allowed the preservation of the area's natural appearance. We also created secondary low-flow channels that enhanced aquatic and riparian habitats. In addition, we developed an adaptive management plan to help the MHFD and CoLT identify and address potential future erosion risks. Come back to this space tomorrow to learn more about how adaptive management was used on this project. We’re proud to be part of this crucial project, enhancing the resilience and sustainability of Happy Canyon Creek. ????? #wearemerrick
