“We want to protect reproductive and sexual health, that is what it is all about,” said Terje Svingen, MERLON project coordinator at the 6th Annual Forum on #EndocrineDisrupters. He highlighted how the project will help chemical risk assessors and policymakers to better identify and ultimately regulate EDCs. Terje presented alongside four other projects in the ENKORE Cluster - NEMESIS Project, EDC-MASLD, ENDOMIX, and HYPIEND. ??? Missed this session at the 6th #EDforum? Girls exposed to certain?endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs)?may be more likely to start puberty early, according to new research published in?Endocrinology, the flagship basic science journal of the Endocrine Society. EDCs mimic, block or interfere with hormones in the body's endocrine system: https://bit.ly/3Xkt6Nd? ? “We conducted a comprehensive screen of 10,000 environmental compounds with extensive follow-up studies using human brain cells that control the reproductive axis, and our team identified several substances that may contribute to early puberty in girls.”?—?Natalie Shaw, MD, MMSc? ? #EDCs #Endocrinology

“Reproductive health is integral to everyone’s life, but chemical exposures are putting it at risk. This threatens our well-being, and we owe it to future generations to get our act together,” says Terje Svingen, Professor and Head of the Research Group for Molecular and Reproductive Toxicology at DTU National Food Institute. He is also the coordinator of MERLON, a new EU-funded project researching the health impacts of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Also referred to as hormone disruptors, EDCs are synthetic substances that can interfere with the normal functioning of our body’s hormone system and consequently impact people’s health or the environment. EDCs can cause health problems such as cancers, infertility and reproductive health problems, diabetes and obesity, and thyroid disorders. MERLON includes scientists, medical practitioners, communicators, and policy advocates from 11 partner institutions across 7 European countries. The partners are: DTU National Food Institute (coordinator), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Karolinska Institutet, Research Institute for Environmental and Occupational Health (IRSET), Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet), University of Liege, Pere Virgili Institute for Health Research (IISPV), National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), @University of Cordoba, Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL), Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA).
