On November 20th, SAFETY4SEA hosted its first Dubai Forum, centered on the decarbonization of the shipping industry and the importance of ESG and responsible practices in the business community. We proudly showcased Mercuria's flagship initiative - the Ocean Science Expedition. This initiative involved a voyage across the North West Passage onboard the sailing vessel "Abel Tasman", passing through 6 of the planet's tipping points located in the Arctic Circle. The expedition aims to raise awareness about the effects of climate change in the Arctic and our path towards achieving net zero. ?? The India Edition of the Mercuria Hackathon in Bengaluru has come to an exciting end! We were thrilled to host 42 students from 18 institutions, selected from over 250 applications across India. ?? Over the past 36 hours, these brilliant minds were split into 11 teams and faced the challenge of a virtual escape room before diving into one of two open-ended challenges.?Despite the lack of sleep, the attitude of the participants was incredibly positive and energetic and amidst the coding frenzy and the 30 bean bags brought along, we even celebrated a midnight birthday! ?? Only one team cracked our tricky virtual escape room, while 9 teams tackled the carbon-focused tree tracking challenge and 2 teams took on the security-focused AI & user behaviour challenge. Collectively, they submitted over 8000 lines of code, developing web apps, mobile apps, chatbots, and solutions using vision models, blockchain, OCR, LLMs, IoT devices, and more! There was also copious use of APIs and AI-powered assistants! ?? Huge congratulations to our winning team: Yash Gupta from BMS College of Engineering Bangalore, Kavya M from AMC Engineering College Bengaluru, and Gunavardhan Reddy Perugu from M S Ramaiah Institute of Technology Bangalore. They share a prize of 3 lakh rupees for their outstanding innovative solutions and teamwork! That's why we are thrilled to announce our project with HUB Ocean to develop of the innovative Citizen Sea mobile app, now available on both Apple and Android! ?? What is Citizen Sea? Citizen Sea is a mobile app designed to empower anyone with a connection to the ocean—whether you're a dedicated seafarer or simply a passionate ocean enthusiast. The app allows users to capture and upload photographs of unique data points they observe at sea. These could be negative aspects such as pollution, debris, or marine hazards, or positive aspects such as marine wildlife, aquatic plants, or natural phenomenon like bioluminescence. ?? Why did Minerva help develop this app? Our oceans are vast and largely unexplored, with significant gaps in survey data. By helping to develop Citizen Sea, we hope to contribute to filling these gaps. The data collected through the app will be sent directly to HUB Ocean, where it will populate their comprehensive Ocean Data Platform. This initiative is another step towards achieving a more complete understanding of our marine environments, ultimately aiding in their preservation and sustainable management. ??
