Black History is Our History! ??????? State Superintendent Tony Thurmond highlighted the significant impact of the AP African American Studies course at a press conference hosted by the California Legislative Black Caucus and The College Board today at the State Capitol. This course, now offered in 117 high schools in California, is a crucial opportunity to increase students' achievement and sense of belonging, not only during #BlackHistoryMonth but all year long. According to a College Board study, nearly 80% of students who took the course increased their confidence in core academic skills like evaluating written sources, analyzing visual artifacts, and developing an argument. Students develop these skills as they explore the complexities of African American history and culture. "By ensuring that our students gain a comprehensive understanding of American history," said Superintendent Thurmond, "including the significant contributions and struggles of African Americans from slavery to freedom, this course empowers the next generation to build a more inclusive and informed society."
