It’s known the US labor market needs skilled workers, and the top question during the “Hope and Dignity: How Second Chance Careers Change Lives” panel at SXSW in Austin, Texas, this past week was “How do we engage and connect with people who can support the US manufacturing community?” ? Panelists Drew Crowe?of The New American Manufacturing Renaissance, Purdue Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) Executive Director Ranae Stewart, James Henry from the Indiana Department of Corrections, and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) Acting Director G. Nagesh R.?discussed how job training programs for formerly incarcerated individuals like Purdue MEP’s?Manufacturing Skills for Success (MS4S)?can result in productive careers and reduce the likelihood of returning to prison.? ? We officially kicked off the Worthington Enterprises Career Accelerator Program! This year, we’re taking it to the next level by partnering with the Manufacturing Extension Partnership and Central Ohio Manufacturing Partnership (COMP) to provide students with hands-on training facilitated by Columbus State Community College to earn their Production Associate Certification. Students from four school districts across Central Ohio have chosen to launch their careers in manufacturing, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome them to our team! This program isn’t just about learning—it’s about empowering the next generation of skilled manufacturing professionals who will shape the future of our industry.

Many formerly incarcerated individuals possess valuable skills gained through previous employment or even self-taught trades. However, they may not have the specific technical skills required for modern manufacturing roles. Training programs like Manufacturing Skills for Success (MS4S) at the Purdue Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), the Indiana MEP and part of the MEP National Network, can help bridge that gap. An upcoming SXSW panel, “Hope and Dignity: How Second Chance Careers Change Lives” on March 9 in Austin, TX will talk about the MS4S program and how the Network can help manufacturers tap into the potential of second-chance workers.
