Mental Health America recently launched a comprehensive rural mental health hub and we couldn’t be more excited! As Mental Health America states: “Living in a rural area - places not near cities and with small populations and large, open land areas - presents different advantages and disadvantages when it comes to caring for your mental health.” With the suicide rate at nearly double that of urban communities, there’s clearly a need for greater mental health resources and care within rural communities, and we hope this hub serves as a good starting point for those looking for more mental health support. With an extensive list of resources and mental health tips, Mental Health America’s rural mental health hub is a great resource, not just for rural communities, but for everyone to take a look at, so check it out! https://lnkd.in/eGp2kkAZ

Is a mental health day truly necessary? Absolutely, says Harvard Health. It's not a luxury, but a proactive step towards better well-being. Recognizing signs of burnout, like increased irritability or decreased productivity, is crucial. Remember, it's okay to take a break. You don't always have to over-explain to your employer, and you can simply say you are taking a personal health day. Regular mental health days can prevent more serious issues down the line. What are your thoughts? #WorkLifeBalance #MentalWellbeing #Leadership #HarvardHealth?

March 1st is Self-Injury Awareness Day ???(SIAD). Let's talk openly about self-injury and break down the stigma. Open conversations are essential. Many hesitate to discuss self-injury, fearing they might encourage the behavior. However, silence only isolates those who are struggling and prevents them from accessing critical support. Understanding Self-Injury:? Self-injury is often a coping mechanism for intense emotional distress or numbness, *not* attention-seeking. It's a misconception that it's linked to suicidal intent or limited to teenagers. People of all ages, genders, and backgrounds can struggle with self-injury. It can also be a sign of an underlying mental health condition. If you're concerned about your mental well-being or that of a child, take a free and anonymous online mental health screening: https://lnkd.in/gG5-kPcZ How You Can Help:? If someone you know is self-harming, listen with compassion and without judgment. Encourage them to seek professional help and offer your support as they explore healthier coping strategies. Change takes time, and consistent support is crucial. If You Struggle with Self-Harm:? You are not alone, and seeking help is a sign of strength. There are resources available to support you in developing healthier coping mechanisms and finding healing. It’s the final week of #BlackHistoryMonth and this week we’d like to celebrate the contributions of Paul Bertau Cornely, M.D., DrPH, whose legacy continues to inspire efforts to address health inequities and promote social justice in healthcare. Paul Bertau Cornely was a trailblazing public health physician and civil rights activist. As the first African American to earn a doctorate in public health, he dedicated his career to improving the health of underserved communities. He played a crucial role in exposing the disparities in healthcare access and quality faced by Black Americans, advocating for desegregation in hospitals and medical education. Cornely's activism extended beyond academia, as he served as the first Black president of the American Public Health Association and played a key role in the civil rights movement, including the March on Washington. #BlackMentalHealthPioneers?

This week for #BlackHistoryMonth we recognize Jacki McKinney, M.S.W., a renowned activist and advocate for trauma survivors, particularly those impacted by childhood abuse and the mental health system. Her own journey, marked by early childhood trauma, homelessness, and struggles with mental health, fueled her lifelong dedication to improving services for others. McKinney pioneered the inclusion of consumer voices in mental health care, advocating for culturally competent services, an end to seclusion and restraint, and the recognition of intergenerational trauma. Through her tireless work with organizations like the National People of Color Consumer Survivor Network, she has empowered countless individuals and significantly impacted the mental health landscape. #BlackMentalHealthPioneers
