If you have lost a loved one to suicide, you are a suicide survivor and you are not alone. It is common for suicide survivors to experience severe grief, guilt, anger, depression, forgetfulness and even thoughts of suicide themselves. You may even experience physical symptoms such as headaches, loss of appetite and the inability to sleep. Often survivors find help by meeting with others who have been through a similar experience. The Survivors of Suicide Support Group is: ? A way to share your loss with others and receive support from those who have been there ? A safe place to share experiences and support each other on a journey toward healing ? Led by a peer facilitator who has also experienced loss to suicide Learn more about our Survivors of Suicide Support Group here: https://lnkd.in/gnsxVsfk

It’s Black History Month! While we honor contributions to mental health year-round, this month, we celebrate the Black Americans whose work has been particularly influential. Mamie Phipps Clark, Ph.D. & Kenneth Bancroft Clark, Ph.D. – Conducted the "Doll Study," proving psychological harm of segregation, which influenced Brown v. Board of Education. Kenneth was the first Black APA president, and Mamie founded the Northside Center for Child Development to provide mental health services to marginalized groups. Bebe Moore Campbell – A champion for Black mental health, Campbell founded NAMI-Inglewood to create safe spaces for Black communities. Led efforts for Congress to establish National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month in 2008. Herman George Canady, Ph.D. – Pioneered research on racial bias in IQ testing. Canady’s work exposed how a proctor’s race could impact results. His research promoted culturally competent psychological assessments, ensuring fairer educational and mental health evaluations for Black students. James P. Comer, M.D., M.P.H. – A leader in child psychiatry, Comer founded the Comer School Development Program, improving educational and mental health outcomes for children. Co-founded the Black Psychiatrists of America and advised on education policy under President Obama. Maxie Clarence Maultsby, Jr., M.D. – A psychiatrist who founded Rational Behavior Therapy (RBT), a short-term, drug-free form of CBT for emotional self-management. He pioneered Rational Self-Counseling, a method empowering individuals to apply therapy techniques independently, shaping modern self-help practices. Inez Beverly Prosser, Ph.D. – The first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in psychology, Prosser’s research on the psychological effects of segregation helped lay the groundwork for desegregation efforts, including Brown v. Board of Education. Her work emphasized the link between racism, identity, and mental health. Wow- we are so glad so many of our amazing Frederick County community members could join us at this morning’s Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) Public Input Session!!! Thank you! With a delicious breakfast provided by Wegmans and crisp apples donated from Catoctin Mountain Orchard, we were energized and ready to discuss all things health in Frederick County! Participants had the opportunity to learn more about the pressing health issues in our community identified from the 2025 CHNA report, which will be published in March 2025. These issues were expanded upon by our amazing subject matter experts: ??Racial Equity and Justice: Dr. Denise Rollins, Whole Heart Center, and Danielle Haskin, Frederick County Health Department ??Housing: Vincent Rogers, Frederick County Division of Housing ??Food/Nutrition: Alysia Feuer, Farm to School Frederick ??Mental Health/Social Isolation: Andrea Walker, Frederick County Health Department, and Suzi Borg, Mental Health Association of Frederick County They then collaboratively discussed and thought about which root causes of these issues should be prioritized over the 2025-3028 Local Health Improvement Process (LHIP) cycle. Stay with us as we continue to share more from this event with ways to get involved and provide YOUR input!
