AI leaders, is your HPC platform effectively serving the needs of ALL your end users? Most platform teams I’ve met with either over index on an HPC architecture that supports training or one that better supports GenAI app dev and inferencing. I have a hypothesis on why this is the case… If you've hired someone with a traditional HPC background, they tend to know traditional schedulers really well and likely will stick to it whether that be Slurm, LSF, Symphony, HT Condor, etc. For AI training some of these schedulers, Slurm especially, can work great, but as soon as you move into app dev/test, inferencing, and deploying GenAI applications?(which can?leverage multiple LLMs just to run)?these HPC schedulers fall dramatically short of what end users need. AI workload patterns oscillate between training, R&D including exploratory data analysis, fine tuning, and inferencing. There is no one size fits all HPC scheduler or AI platform architecture that works for all your users. Instead, look at a modular approach and one that leverages a k8s based architecture. Hire someone with an app dev or cloud ops background to manage your GPU cluster as they tend to be well-versed in k8s. Two interesting projects to check out and think about leveraging for your AI platform include Kueue and KServe.What do others think??
