In 1974, Cathy came to Memorial Hospital for a job interview. Fifty years later, she’s one of the longest-tenured employees in the hospital’s history. “I started on the medical-surgical floor and worked there for two years,” said Cathy. “Then a supervisor approached me and asked if I would be interested in working in the operating room. I said I’d love to try.” Since then, Cathy has spent 48 years as an OR nurse, continually growing in her skills and knowledge while enjoying a front-row seat as medicine has evolved and innovated over the decades. “During the early 1980s, surgeons took the time out of their schedules to come once a week and teach us what we needed to know to assist them in the sterile field,” said Cathy. “In 1987, I became the first nurse in my OR to be certified. Then in 1990, we started the heart program, and I just knew I wanted to be a member of this new and exciting team.” In 2018, Cathy was presented with the Distinguished Magnet Nurse of the Year award. “I have always been eager to learn, and I never back down from a challenge,” said Cathy. “When you work in the OR, your focus is on keeping the patient safe.
