It's not every day we get to power elephants!!! But with the Cincinnati Zoo’s latest addition, the New Elephant Trek Habitat, that’s exactly what we’re doing. A 165 kW rooftop solar array now powers the habitat, advancing the Zoo’s commitment to a sustainable future. This installation joins the solar parking canopy, another recent Melink Solar project, to provide clean energy across the zoo grounds. At the heart of this elephantastic endeavor is Mark Fisher, the visionary Vice President of Facilities, Planning, and Sustainability at Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden - and regular appear'er on our LinkedIn feed! Under the Facility Team's leadership, the Elephant Trek is a model of eco-conscious design, featuring a LEED-certified building, massive stormwater retention system, and an energy-efficient approach that benefits both the environment and the Zoo’s bottom line. How is Commercial Solar installed? Here's some work in progress at Queen City Forging Company, where our team is doing a fantastic job in helping them make smart investments in their future. Rob M., President of Queen City Forging, shared his thoughts on why they decided to go solar: "We expect to shave our monthly cost for energy an average of 10% based on your estimates. The tax credits for the investment will also be helpful this year. Additionally, if we can address the basis for demand charges, especially during the summer months when solar production should be highest, I believe there can be an additional cost benefit. Our largest customers have been asking what we are doing and intend to do to assure sustainability. We converted from gas-fired production processes to electric heating over a decade ago. Powering that process equipment with a renewable source is the next step in doing what we can to address a variety of needs and concerns. We had an alignment of issues where installing solar power appeared to be a good risk to take. We anticipate a positive payoff." This project is an excellent example of how investing in solar energy can address financial AND environmental goals. The Queen City Forging team has taken bold steps toward sustainability, and we are proud to support their journey. They led the way with their first system in 2006 and the first #carport project we built with them in 2011, with many more installations to follow. In 2024, the zoo completed another parking canopy project to provide shade for its growing members and visitors, and to help reach its #NetZero goals by 2025. To help offset energy poverty in the neighborhood, the zoo also installed an additional 165 kW of panels through its Community Solar Resiliency Program (CSRP) to support smaller systems at churches, community centers, and schools through SonLight Power. In summary, the Zoo is not only slashing their electric bills, they are also cutting their carbon emissions - while helping their neighbors. They've been doing this for years. They are sharing their solar resources to communities in need so that more families and organizations can access clean, renewable energy and benefit from lower utilities. “How many solar panels would it take to power our school?” and “What happens during the summer months when solar produces more energy than we need?” were some of the questions from 8th grade science classes at INDIAN HILL EXEMPTED VILLAGE SCHOOL DISTRICT last week. We were delighted to educate the students alongside Jake Kuss, who left a Green Energy Machine with the teachers to continue shedding the light on solar energy. Younger generations value sustainability and will be our future leaders in the renewable energy sector. We are thankful for Shared Power Network’s meaningful impact at Ohio schools!
