MeliBio, a California-based startup developing #honey without #bees, says it is on course to reach profitability by the year end as it ramps up sales in the US market. MeliBio’s first commercially-available product—sold under the?Mellody?brand in the US—contains 80% fructose and glucose and 18% water, but gets its distinct flavor and properties from a blend of plant extracts comprising the remaining 2% (red clover, jasmine, passionflower, chamomile, and seaberry, coupled with gluconic acid and natural flavors). The next generation of products will feature enzymes—made by microbes in fermentation tanks—that bees use to convert nectar into honey, which will deliver a product that is far closer nutritionally, to honey made by bees, says cofounder Darko Mandich. “We’ve built a CPG business that has real customers and very attractive margins, with lots of room to grow, but we are still betting that the precision fermentation route will allow the VC returns that we are working towards.”? #foodtech #veganhoney #precisionfermentation #plantbased AgFunder

Through this pitch event, we sought to highlight entrepreneurs developing new functional proteins, flavor compounds, enzyme systems, and next-generation sweeteners from around the world. Cellibre, The Protein Brewery, and MeliBio were our third, second, and first-place winners, respectively. MeliBio utilizes plant science and precision fermentation to produce honey and other bee products without bees. Their first product, Mellody plant-based honey, is now available nationwide.
