Before the doors of our new North Canton, Ohio store opened earlier this spring, Store Director Sheila Dowgiert and her team began investing in the community starting with a $15,000 donation to Local Hope, the Jackie Davison Foundation. This organization supports local women fighting life-threatening diseases like cancer by covering necessary expenses that they cannot pay due to medical bills. This back-to-school season, our team had the opportunity to partner with the Detroit Tigers Foundation, The Fox Theatre and The Children's Center of Wayne County (Detroit) to pack over 1,500 backpacks for kids in need. With the help of these incredible organizations, we made sure these students had what they needed to start the school year off right. Thank you to our partners and everyone who supported this effort. For more than 30 years, we’ve partnered with the Equest Center for Therapeutic Riding, Inc, which aims to improve the quality of life through equine-based therapy to physically, mentally and socially/emotionally challenged individuals. Located in Rockford, Mich., Equest Center continues to grow significantly, offering more innovative programs and resources for children and families. In an effort to offer additional convenience to patients needing prescriptions filled before leaving the hospital, we expanded our partnership with Corewell Health this week, opening a new, full-service retail pharmacy at Blodgett Hospital. In alignment with our broader environmental efforts, which prioritize a 50 percent reduction of carbon emissions by 2025, and innovative heritage, we’re excited about the recent installation of 2,397 solar modules that cover an estimated 125,000 square feet of our Sycamore, Ill. Meijer supercenter’s roof. The pilot project generates renewable energy in support of statewide carbon reduction initiatives. The supercenter in Sycamore, which opened in 2020, fits the solar panel roof criteria due to state regulations, modernity of the building and favorable sun exposure. A team from our West Detroit market recently helped students with developmental disabilities at Friendship Circle of Michigan, which teaches essential life skills to people of all ages. A favorite activity among our team members was working on money management with the student customers, who were each given $12 to budget. We recently announced the expansion of our plastic cleanup program with the addition of the BeBot and PixieDrone in Greater Milwaukee. Thanks to our strong, ongoing partnerships with Milwaukee Riverkeeper and Council of the Great Lakes Region, we continue to tackle plastic pollution in Wisconsin’s important waterways, targeting harmful microplastics on our beaches and rivers, protecting our natural resources and raising awareness on ways to better our world.
