Mehta Tech Digital Fault Recorders have demonstrated the highest levels of reliability. Modular design makes for easy, cost-effective upgrades to incorporate the latest advances in hardware and software. System expansion and retrofitting of existing installed equipment can be performed quickly and economically. Our current systems exceed the NERC standards for Fault and Disturbance Monitoring Equipment. Mehta Tech solution meets or exceeds IEEE C37.118 and PRC 002-2 standards.

  •   👀 Is Your Substation Monitoring as Reliable as You Think? 🤔 With the rise of Digital Substations, many utilities are reevaluating how they capture and analyze System Fault Data. A common trend is to rely solely on system protection devices for fault recording. At first glance, this seems logical—fewer devices, less complexity. But does it truly provide the level of visibility needed for reliability and compliance? Here’s why standalone Digital Fault Recorders (DFRs) are still critical: ✅ Higher Data Resolution – Captures kHz-range waveforms for deeper fault analysis. ✅ Longer Event Storage – Unlike relays, DFRs retain historical data for trend analysis. ✅ Independent & Redundant – Operates separately from protection devices for reliable data capture. ✅ GPS Time Sync – Ensures accurate correlation across the grid. ✅ Better Grid Visibility – Works seamlessly with PMUs for system-wide monitoring. Here is a Real-World Example: A utility detected repeated fault triggers on its DFR and thought the DFR was faulty. The technicians checked for fault records in all the other devices in the substation, and there were no relay trips or alarms that could be traced to the triggering of the DFR records. They even used a digital volt meter to check the devices physically and found nothing unusual. 🤷 Upon contacting the DFR manufacturer and analyzing the data in the triggered report, they discovered a failing Capacitive Voltage Transformer (CVT). The disturbances on the A phase were minimal enough not to trigger a protection event. However, the resolution of the DFR settings created multiple records, which had been happening long enough to display an easily recognized failure trend. Addressing it proactively prevented a catastrophic failure. Without a stand-alone DFR, this issue may have gone unnoticed until it was too late. ⚡ What is the purpose of this post? DFRs act as the “Canary in the Coal Mine” for substations, providing critical early warnings and lengthy record storage capabilities to ensure compliance with NERC PRC-002-5 and PRC-028 and ultimately protecting grid reliability. 🎯 Are you still relying solely on protective devices for fault recording?
