Today is World Diabetes Day! Here are some thought provoking facts as we recognize diabetes’ impact on the health of millions of people in the US and beyond: ???Over 37 million Americans have diabetes, with about 90-95% having type 2 diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that another 96 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, a condition that can progress to type 2 diabetes if not managed with lifestyle changes. The prevalence of diabetes is rising, influenced by factors such as aging, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles. ???Diabetes is one of the most expensive chronic health conditions in the U.S. Annual diabetes-related healthcare costs are estimated at around $327 billion, with over $240 billion spent on direct medical costs. People with diabetes have healthcare costs about 2.3 times higher than those without the condition. ?? For those at risk, lifestyle changes—such as moderate weight loss, regular physical activity, and a balanced diet—can reduce the risk of progressing from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes by up to 58%, according to the National Diabetes Prevention Program. World Diabetes Day serves as a reminder of these critical issues and the need for continued awareness, research, and preventive measures.
